On Monday, July 13, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) confirmed that they and the legendary head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually decided to part ways, bringing an end to one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Stephen Fleming is regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he guided the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to five IPL trophies and 2 Champions League Twenty20 titles.
The decision was reached with respect and gratitude – CSK on parting ways with Stephen Fleming
Although Stephen Fleming led CSK to a record 12 playoffs and 10 IPL finals, the recent performances of the team did not match the standards set by the Yellow Army.
In the official media release, CSK stated that the hard decision was reached with respect and gratitude, following a series of open and honest discussions between the two parties.
“The Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to mutually part ways, bringing to a close one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League.
“The decision was reached with respect and gratitude, following a series of open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management,” CSK said in an official statement.
Talking about his exit, Stephen Fleming, who joined the Yellow Army as a player in the inaugural IPL, said that he was privileged to get the opportunity to spend 18 years of his coaching career at Chennai Super Kings and will leave the franchise with gratitude.
“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.”
“Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”
Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit – Rupa Gurunath
In an official media release, Rupa Gurunath, Chennai Super Kings owner, labelled Stephen Fleming as the heartbeat of CSK. Rupa Gurunath stated:
“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
“On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
Also, KS Viswanathan, the Managing Director of Chennai Super Kings, asserted that Fleming’s greatest strength as the coach was bringing out the best from individuals. He stated:
“From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths.”
“His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together.”
Why did Stephen Fleming and CSK decide to part ways before IPL 2027?
Stephen Fleming’s departure from Chennai Super Kings comes after the franchise endured three disappointing IPL seasons in succession, a sharp contrast to the consistency that defined his 18-year tenure. While CSK backed Fleming through a squad rebuild after the MS Dhoni era began winding down, the results failed to justify that faith.
The warning signs first emerged in IPL 2024, when CSK finished fifth with seven wins from 14 matches and narrowly missed out on the playoffs. Expectations were higher in IPL 2025, but the franchise endured an even tougher campaign, ending at the bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 games.
Any hopes of a turnaround in IPL 2026 were short-lived as CSK again failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing eighth despite making significant changes to their squad and investing in a younger core. More concerning than the results was CSK’s inability to adapt to the modern demands of T20 cricket.
With three underwhelming seasons, only one playoff race, and no tangible improvement despite rebuilding the squad, the franchise felt a fresh direction was necessary. Although the official statement described the separation as a mutual decision reached with “respect and gratitude,” the sustained decline in performances and the need to modernize CSK’s cricketing philosophy ultimately brought one of the IPL’s most successful coach-franchise partnerships to an end.
