The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has now become absolutely intense as the tournament enters its business end. Teams are not only fighting to qualify for the playoffs but also desperately trying to finish in the top two on the points table, which makes every game like a knockout.
Finishing in the top two gives teams a huge advantage in the Indian Premier League. The top two teams get an extra chance to reach the final through Qualifier 1. Even if they lose one match, they still get another opportunity to reach the finals.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: The Frontrunners for a Top-2 Finish in IPL 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are currently looking strongest in the race for the top two finishes in the ongoing IPL 2026. SRH has played fearless cricket throughout the season, and their aggressive batting style has helped them build an excellent Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.737.

They are currently sitting at the top of the points table with 14 points from 11 games so far. Now, the Orange Army needs only 2 wins in their remaining 3 matches to virtually guarantee a top-two finish.
Even if Sunrisers Hyderabad lose one game, their strong NRR still gives them a big advantage over other teams fighting for the same spots, thanks to their aggressive batting approach.
The ‘Three-in-Four’ Club: RCB, RR, PBKS, and GT
Then comes the biggest battle involving four dangerous teams of this season, including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Gujarat Titans (GT).
All four teams are almost in the same situation for the top two finishes at the moment. RCB, RR, PBKS, and GT need to win at least three of their remaining four matches if they want a strong chance of finishing inside the top two on the IPL 2026 points table.
Both RCB and RR have shown brilliant form at different stages this season, but consistency has been their biggest problem. Now, the defending champions and 2008 IPL champions cannot afford another poor performance because every loss can push them down the table.
The Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans have also been among the most dangerous teams this season. BOT PBKS and GT surprised everyone with their fearless cricket, but they lost the momentum at the crucial stage. Now, the second-ranked Punjab and fifth-placed GT need some big victories as well to improve their NRR for a top-two finish in the group phase.

Tough road for Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings are in the toughest situation among all the IPL 2026 playoff contenders. The five-time IPL champions still have a chance to finish in the top two, but they now need to win all their remaining four matches for the same.
Even one defeat could almost end the sixth-place CSK hopes of finishing in the top two, but they could still make it to the playoffs if they continue their momentum.
The NRR Factor
Another massive factor in this race is Net Run Rate (NRR). Since many teams may finish with similar points, NRR could decide who gets the top positions on the table.
Because of this, teams are now trying to win by big margins, and five of these six teams have almost no room for error at this stage in the ongoing tournament.
