Zimbabwe veteran Brendan Taylor added another remarkable chapter to his international career on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter surpassed Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the longest career in men’s ODI cricket after being named in Zimbabwe’s playing XI for the first ODI against Australia in Harare.
Taylor’s return to the international stage has already been a notable story, but his appearance against Australia made it historic. His ODI career has now stretched to 22 years and 148 days, moving beyond Tendulkar’s previous record of 22 years and 91 days.
Brendan Taylor surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI longevity record
Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in April 2004. More than two decades later, the 40-year-old found himself back on the international stage and rewriting a record that had belonged to Tendulkar for more than 14 years.
Tendulkar began his ODI career in December 1989 and played his final match in March 2012. During his remarkable career, the former India batter set numerous records and became one of the most influential figures in international cricket.
His ODI career lasted 22 years and 91 days, a mark that appeared extremely difficult to surpass. Taylor, however, achieved the feat despite his own international journey taking several unexpected turns.
Taylor’s 208-ODI career makes the milestone unique
One of the most interesting aspects of Taylor’s achievement is the difference in the number of matches played by the two cricketers.
Taylor entered the Australia series having featured in 207 ODIs, while Tendulkar remains the most-capped player in men’s ODI history with 463 appearances.
Taylor has accumulated 6,708 ODI runs, including 11 centuries, with an unbeaten 145 as his highest score. While his numbers do not match Tendulkar’s extraordinary statistical output, his longevity has now given him a unique place in ODI history.
Taylor’s career has also included lengthy interruptions. He initially retired from international cricket in 2021 and later served a three-and-a-half-year suspension after being sanctioned for breaches of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping Codes. He subsequently returned to Zimbabwe cricket, eventually making his way back into the international setup.
Sachin Tendulkar retains major ODI records
Taylor’s achievement does not mean that Tendulkar’s dominance of the ODI record books has disappeared. The former India opener still owns several of the format’s most significant records.
Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in men’s ODI cricket with 18,426 runs. He also holds the record for the most ODI appearances, having played 463 matches during his international career.
Therefore, Taylor’s latest milestone is specifically about career longevity. It highlights the extraordinary span between his first ODI appearance and his latest international outing rather than replacing Tendulkar’s broader statistical achievements.
Taylor’s historic comeback against Australia
Taylor’s record-breaking appearance came after Zimbabwe recalled him for their three-match ODI series against Australia. He was brought back after spending a year away from the format and was also expected to take on wicketkeeping responsibilities following Clive Madande’s injury.
The historic occasion did not result in a major batting contribution, as Taylor was dismissed for four runs off 13 balls while Zimbabwe chased Australia’s target of 295. He did, however, contribute behind the stumps, taking a diving catch to dismiss Josh Inglis.
Australia went on to win the opening ODI by 59 runs. Matt Renshaw scored his maiden ODI century, while Nathan Ellis starred with the ball, finishing with 5/31.
