The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced schedule for byelections to five Assembly constituencies across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal and also for a parliamentary constituency in Assam.

The polling will take place on October 6, 2026 and the counting of votes is scheduled for October 9, 2026, as per the announcement.

Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies Madurantakam and Dharapuram became vacant after the resignation of AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P.Sathyabama to join the ruling TVK.

Thattanchavady Assembly constituency in Puducherry was one of the two seats contested by CM N. Rangaswamy, who vacated the seat for Mangalam Assembly constituency.

Similarly, the resignations of West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari and Humayun Kabir from the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies respectively, after they had both won two seats, has necessitated the byelection.

The Nagaon parliamentary constituency from Assam became vacant after BJP leader Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from his Lok Sabha seat after quitting the Congress party.
