Auqib Nabi’s Nightmare Debut: Breaks Indian Record, Enters World Record List

A dream international debut turned into a nightmare for Auqib Nabi as the Indian pacer registered an unwanted record in his very first ODI against West Indies.

Nabi finished with figures of 0/84 in 8.5 overs, conceding runs at an economy rate of around 9.50. More significantly, those 84 runs made him the most expensive Indian bowler on ODI debut in terms of runs conceded.

It was certainly not the kind of record Nabi would have wanted on a day that was supposed to be one of the most memorable of his career.

Auqib Nabi Breaks Indian Record on ODI Debut

Before Nabi, the unwanted Indian record belonged to Karsan Ghavri, who conceded 83 runs on his ODI debut against England at Lord’s during the 1975 World Cup.

That record had survived for more than five decades.

Mohammed Siraj also endured a difficult ODI debut against Australia in Adelaide in 2019, finishing with 0/76 from 10 overs.

But Nabi has now gone past both of them after conceding 84 runs against West Indies.

His final figures read:

8.5 overs, 84 runs, 0 wickets

That made Nabi the most expensive Indian bowler in terms of runs conceded on ODI debut.

Auqib Nabi Also Enters Unwanted World Record List

The damage was not limited to the Indian record. Nabi’s expensive spell also put his name among the costliest bowling performances by a player on ODI debut.

According to the historical figures, Ireland’s Peter Connell conceded 95 runs in nine overs on his ODI debut, while West Indies’ KG Harding conceded 88 runs from 10 overs.

Nabi’s 84 runs now put him high on this unwanted global list.

So while his performance was not the most expensive ODI debut of all time, it was expensive enough to place his name alongside some of the toughest debut outings in ODI history.

A Difficult Start Despite Conditions Offering Hope

There was plenty of excitement around Nabi before the match.

With grass visible on the surface, there was an expectation that the fast bowler could get some assistance and make an immediate impact on debut.

Instead, things quickly became difficult.

Nabi struggled to consistently find the right line and length. Extras also hurt him, with the pressure of international cricket appearing to affect his rhythm.

Even his search for a maiden ODI wicket ended in disappointment. He had an opportunity late in his spell, but the chance did not result in a wicket.

He therefore walked away from his first international match wicketless after conceding 84 runs.

One Bad Debut Should Not Define Auqib Nabi

The numbers look brutal, but one performance should not define Nabi’s international career.

The conditions were extremely difficult for fast bowlers, with the small boundaries giving batters very little reason to hold back. Nabi was also not the only Indian pacer to find things difficult.

Making an international debut brings a completely different level of pressure, and sometimes even talented domestic performers need time to adjust.

Nabi will certainly want to forget the bowling figures from his first match as quickly as possible. But instead of allowing one difficult outing to damage his confidence, the challenge now is to learn from it and respond strongly whenever his next opportunity arrives.

Many players remember their international debut for the right reasons.

For Auqib Nabi, unfortunately, this one became memorable for an unwanted Indian record and a place on an unwanted world list.
