Sangakkara vs De Villiers vs Gilchrist vs Dhoni: Warner Picks His Shocking All-Time Greatest Wicketkeeper

Australian cricket legend David Warner has reportedly made a surprising choice while selecting the greatest wicketkeeper of all time. In a rapid-fire comparison featuring some of cricket’s biggest names, including Kumar Sangakkara, AB de Villiers, Adam Gilchrist and MS Dhoni, Warner’s final selection could surprise many fans, particularly because one of the contenders was his legendary Australian compatriot.

Cricket fans often expect players to favour legends from their own country, especially those they grew up watching or played alongside. However, Warner appeared to put national loyalty aside while making his selections.

The interesting part was how his preferences changed as different wicketkeepers were placed against each other.

David Warner’s Choices Among Cricket’s Legendary Wicketkeepers

During a rapid-fire comparison, Warner was reportedly asked to choose between two wicketkeeper-batters at a time, with the winner facing another legendary name.

The challenge began with Kumar Sangakkara and Rishabh Pant. Warner preferred the Sri Lankan legend, who also remained his choice against South Africa’s Mark Boucher and New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum.

However, the first major surprise came when Jos Buttler entered the competition. Warner picked the English wicketkeeper ahead of Sangakkara, despite the Sri Lankan’s extraordinary achievements across international cricket.

The next comparison was equally interesting. When asked to choose between Buttler and AB de Villiers, Warner again backed Buttler, overlooking one of the most destructive and versatile batters cricket has ever witnessed.

But the toughest decisions were still to come.

Warner Makes His Final Choice Between MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist

After backing Buttler over several legendary names, Warner was asked to choose between the English star and former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

This time, he switched his preference to Dhoni.

That left one final comparison: MS Dhoni versus Adam Gilchrist.

Gilchrist is widely regarded as one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batters in cricket history. His aggressive batting transformed expectations of the role, while his contributions to Australia’s dominance made him an iconic figure.

Many fans might have expected Warner to support his fellow Australian, particularly given Gilchrist’s remarkable achievements in Test and ODI cricket.

However, Warner reportedly stuck with MS Dhoni, making the former Indian captain his ultimate choice for the greatest wicketkeeper of all time.

Does MS Dhoni Deserve to Be Called the Greatest Wicketkeeper?

Dhoni certainly has a strong case. His lightning-fast stumpings, sharp cricketing intelligence and remarkable consistency behind the stumps made him one of the finest wicketkeepers of his generation.

He completed 829 dismissals in international cricket, including 195 stumpings. His record of 123 stumpings in ODIs remains a remarkable achievement.

As a batter, Dhoni was especially influential in white-ball cricket. He reached the No. 1 position in the ICC ODI batting rankings and established himself as one of the finest finishers in the game.

His captaincy strengthens his legacy even further. Dhoni led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy titles, besides guiding Chennai Super Kings to five IPL championships.

However, if the discussion focuses purely on batting impact across all three international formats, the debate becomes more complicated.

Sangakkara and De Villiers enjoyed extraordinary success in Test cricket as well as limited-overs formats, while Gilchrist revolutionised the wicketkeeper-batter’s role with his attacking approach. Dhoni’s Test batting record was comparatively less dominant than those of these greats.

That distinction matters because being the greatest wicketkeeper, the greatest wicketkeeper-batter and the greatest captain are three different debates.

Nevertheless, Warner’s reported choice reflects the enormous respect Dhoni commands beyond India. Even with legends such as Sangakkara, De Villiers and Gilchrist in contention, the Australian opener ultimately backed the man who helped transform Indian cricket.
