Is Mumbai Indians set to reappoint Rohit Sharma as captain for IPL 2027? Here’s what we know

Rohit Sharma could be set for a sensational return as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. According to recent media reports, the five-time champions are considering bringing back their most successful skipper after a challenging period under Hardik Pandya.

The development has generated considerable interest among MI supporters, particularly because Rohit remains closely associated with the franchise’s most successful era. However, Mumbai Indians have not officially confirmed a captaincy change, meaning the reports should be treated as speculation until the franchise makes an announcement.

Rohit Sharma’s possible return to Mumbai Indians captaincy

Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Under his leadership, the franchise established itself as one of the tournament’s most successful teams.

His captaincy ended ahead of IPL 2024, when Hardik Pandya returned to MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) and took over the leadership role. The decision attracted considerable attention, with Rohit’s supporters questioning the franchise’s move to replace a captain who had delivered five championships.

Hardik’s tenure has since produced mixed results. Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table in 2024 before reaching the playoffs in 2025. Reports following the 2026 campaign have once again brought the franchise’s leadership plans into focus.

According to Sports Tak, Mumbai are seriously considering handing the captaincy back to Rohit. The report suggests the franchise could value his experience and ability to bring the squad together as it looks to improve its performances.

What happens to Hardik Pandya, other captaincy options for MI?

Rohit’s potential return would raise immediate questions about Hardik’s future at Mumbai Indians. Speculation about a possible move to another franchise has continued, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) among the teams mentioned in media reports.

However, there is no confirmed trade involving Hardik, and MI have not officially announced that he will lose the captaincy. Any transfer would depend on negotiations between the franchises and agreement on suitable terms.

MI also have other leadership options. Suryakumar Yadav has captained the side when Hardik was unavailable, while Tilak Varma has emerged as a promising long-term candidate. Jasprit Bumrah has also featured in discussions about the team’s future leadership.

Nevertheless, reports indicate that MI could prefer an experienced option in Rohit for the 2027 season before considering a longer-term succession plan.

MI have not won the IPL title since 2020, and the franchise will be keen to return to championship contention. Bringing back Rohit as captain could offer continuity and draw on his proven record in high-pressure situations.

There is also a longer-term consideration. Rohit will turn 40 during the IPL 2027 season, while the ODI World Cup is scheduled for later that year. If he returns to the leadership role, MI may need to prepare a successor for the seasons that follow.

Tilak could be one option for the future, while Suryakumar’s captaincy experience may also be valuable. The franchise will need to balance immediate results with its long-term plans.
