A rare stainless-steel watch by independent watchmaker Kari Voutilainen sold for $1.016 million at a Phillips auction in New York on October 9, 2026, substantially exceeding its highest estimate of $240,000. The timepiece, a Voutilainen 28Sport Limited Edition numbered 5 of 8, was offered by its original owner and sold for more than four times its upper estimate of $240,000. According to the official Phillips auction listing, the watch featured a blue guilloché dial surrounding a black onyx centre and came with its certificate and original presentation box. The result highlights the demand for rare watches made by independent horologists, particularly pieces distinguished by limited production and detailed craftsmanship.

A rare watch far exceeds its estimate

The watch was lot 22 in Phillips Watches Online: The New York Sessions Fall 2026. The auction house estimated it at $120,000 to $240,000, but it ultimately sold for $1,016,000, including the buyer’s premium. The result was particularly notable because the final price exceeded the top estimate by $776,000. It was more than four times the highest estimate, making the watch one of the standout results of the online sale.According to Phillips, the watch dates to around 2021 and was consigned by its original owner. It was presented with a Voutilainen certificate booklet, instruction manual, polishing cloth, travel case, additional strap, outer packaging and fitted presentation box. The sale was part of an auction featuring 88 lots of watches. Barrington Watch Winders, which reported on the result, noted that the 28Sport was among the sale’s most striking performers. The auction’s result also demonstrated how a particular combination of rarity, design and maker reputation can push a collectible timepiece well beyond its estimate.

What makes the Voutilainen 28Sport distinctive

The 28Sport is different from the traditional dress watches and complicated timepieces for which Voutilainen is known. The model combines a relatively sporty design with the careful finishing associated with independent Swiss watchmaking. The model was introduced in 2020 in limited runs of eight stainless-steel watches and eight titanium examples. The auctioned watch was number 5 of the eight steel pieces, making it part of a very small production series. Its 39-millimetre stainless-steel case has distinctive downturned, teardrop-shaped lugs. The dial is one of its most recognisable features, combining a glossy black onyx centre with a blue, engine-turned guilloché hour track. Orange indexes add contrast, while luminous details help make the time visible in low light. Phillips described the particular dial configuration as possibly one of only two examples across the limited edition. This additional rarity may have contributed to the strong auction result, although the final price alone does not establish which factor influenced bidders most.

Hand-finished mechanics behind the design

Beyond its appearance, the watch contains an in-house manually wound calibre 28 movement with 21 jewels. Phillips’ catalogue notes describe a large balance wheel and a distinctive balance-spring arrangement combining a Phillips overcoil on the outer curve with a Grossmann curve on the inner section. The movement is finished with traditional decorative techniques, including Côtes de Genève and perlage on the base plate. These details reflect the time and specialist skill involved in producing a watch in a small independent workshop.Voutilainen’s approach differs from the mass production of many large watch brands. His watches are associated with hand-fabricated components, careful assembly and detailed finishing. In the luxury watch market, such work can make an individual piece appealing to collectors who value mechanical construction as much as brand recognition.

What the million-dollar sale means for collectors

The watch’s ownership history adds another dimension to the result. Phillips identified it as property of the original owner, and the catalogue dates the example to around 2021. Barrington Watch Winders reported that the owner had bought it new in 2021 before consigning it for the October 2026 sale. The $1.016 million result is a substantial difference from the auction estimate, but it should not automatically be treated as the owner’s profit. The original purchase price, transaction costs, insurance, servicing and other expenses would be needed to calculate the actual return. The sale also does not guarantee that other Voutilainen watches will command similar prices. The 28Sport’s limited production, unusual onyx-and-guilloché dial and condition as a complete set distinguish this particular example. Nevertheless, the result illustrates how independent watchmakers can attract significant collector interest when craftsmanship and scarcity come together. For a watch estimated at $240,000 at the upper end, a seven-figure sale represents a striking auction outcome and a notable moment for the Voutilainen 28Sport.
