Ahead of the Mumbai Indians’ next IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, May 4, former skipper Rohit Sharma found himself embroiled in a new incident. The incident happened during MI’s net practice session at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, May 3.
During the session, it was reported that Rohit had accidentally hit a groundsman while practicing one of his shots. The injured groundsman, Siban Biswas, spoke to Mid-Day about the incident.
Rohit Sharma accidentally hits a member of the ground staff
“When Rohit Sharma sir told us to remove the off-side net, we did so and stood at the side. Just then, while I was wrapping the rope and not paying attention to the players nearby, the ball hit me on my left knee.”
“Rohit sir immediately came and inquired about the injury, but I told him to continue batting and not to bother. Yet, he returned with an ice pack and also sent someone to give me some medicine and a spray to put on my leg,” Biswas, 27, said. “It was mixed feelings… though my knee was in pain, it also feels good because I got a handshake with Rohit sir,” added Biswas.
Rohit Sharma misses many matches due to injury
Rohit started the season strongly with a sublime 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, but he has only been able to play 4 matches. During the fourth match, against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12, Rohit Sharma injured his toe and had to leave the field. Since then, a hamstring injury has delayed his return to the field.
So far, Rohit has made 137 runs in 4 matches at an average of 45.67 and a strike rate of 165 with one fifty and a high score of 78. In his absence, MI have been unable to find stability in the top order trying out three different opening pairs in five matches since he left.

Mumbai Indians poor form in IPL 2026
Not just their opening, the Mumbai Indians have been struggling in every single department in IPL 2026. With just 2 wins in 9 matches, they are last on the points table.
Most of their big stars, like Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, are out of form. This has resulted in the Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes being completely ripped apart.
MI have a less than negligible chance of qualifying for the playoffs now, even if they win all of their matches from here. The string of losses has forced their net run rate to take a severe hit as well.
Mumbai Indians next match
MI are currently on a three-match losing streak. On May 4, they will take on tenth-placed Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
LSG themselves are struggling badly in the season, with 2 wins from 8 matches and the worst net run rate in the league. The Rishabh Pant-led side are currently on a five-match losing streak. MI vs LSG is likely to be a clash for avoiding tenth place rather than one for bolstering either team’s playoff chances.
