Here’s how PBKS can still qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after losing against RCB in Dharamsala

Punjab KingsIPL 2026 campaign took another painful turn on Sunday as they suffered a crushing 23-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala. The victory not only strengthened RCB’s incredible season but also made them the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings were left staring at a difficult qualification equation after slipping to their sixth consecutive defeat in the tournament.

RCB book berth in playoffs after beating PBKS

Batting first, RCB produced a commanding batting performance to post a daunting total of 222/4 in 20 overs. Player of the Match Venkatesh Iyer stole the show with a magnificent unbeaten 73, while Virat Kohli continued his brilliant form with a composed 58. Devdutt Padikkal also chipped in with a fluent 45 to keep the scoreboard moving throughout the innings.

In reply, Punjab Kings endured a nightmare start as their top order collapsed under pressure. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rasikh Salam Dar ripped through the batting lineup early, reducing PBKS to 19/3 inside the opening four overs. Although Shashank Singh launched a sensational late counterattack with 56 off just 27 deliveries and Marcus Stoinis contributed a fighting 37, the steep asking rate proved too much to handle. Rasikh’s impressive figures of 3/36 ensured PBKS were restricted to 199/8.

Punjab Kings suffer sixth straight defeat

Punjab Kings have now entered a dangerous phase of the tournament after registering six successive losses at the business end of the season. What once looked like a promising playoff push has now turned into a desperate fight for survival, with the team’s momentum completely disappearing over the last few weeks.

The losing streak has exposed several concerns within the squad. Their batting lineup has repeatedly failed to provide strong starts, while the bowling attack has struggled to contain opposition batters in pressure situations. The inability to finish close matches and maintain consistency has severely hurt Punjab’s campaign.

Adding to their troubles, the repeated defeats have also affected their Net Run Rate, which could become the deciding factor in the playoff race. With only one group-stage match left, Punjab Kings no longer have the luxury of controlling their own fate and must now rely heavily on results from other teams.

IPL 2026 playoff qualification scenario for PBKS

Despite their disastrous run, Punjab Kings are still mathematically alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race. Currently placed fourth with 13 points from 13 matches, Shreyas Iyer’s men can still reach a maximum of 15 points if they defeat Lucknow Super Giants in their final league game on May 23.

However, that victory alone will not guarantee qualification. The first and most important condition is straightforward — Punjab Kings must win their final match against LSG. A defeat or even a washout would immediately eliminate them from the competition.

Along with securing two points, PBKS will also need a convincing margin of victory to improve their Net Run Rate, which currently stands at +0.227. A healthy NRR could become crucial if multiple teams finish tied on 15 points.

Punjab Kings also require several favourable results from other teams:

  • Chennai Super Kings must lose at least one of their remaining matches against SRH or GT so that they remain below the 15-point mark.
Delhi Capitals can only reach a maximum of 14 points and therefore will remain behind Punjab if PBKS win their final game.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders must lose at least one of their remaining two matches. If KKR win both fixtures, they will also finish on 15 points, bringing NRR into the equation.
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad need to lose both of their remaining games to stay below Punjab’s potential tally.

With so many conditions attached, Punjab Kings now face an anxious wait. Their playoff hopes are still alive, but only just.
