It was not a high-scoring match, but surely a well-fought contest between bat and ball. Mumbai Indians (MI) are already ruled out of the IPL 2026 race, while the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) remain in the title contention, balancing on a thin rope. To maintain the balance, they needed to register a win tonight against the Mumbai Indians.
Ahead of the match, Ajinkya Rahane’s side was in 8th spot with 11 points from 12 games and a net run rate of −0.038. The top three teams in the IPL 2026 points table, which are Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, have already secured their berths in the play-offs with 16 points or more.
Can KKR make their way into the IPL 2026 play-offs?
Traditionally, 16 points prove enough to make it through the next round. By any means, the three-time champions is not going to achieve the 16-point mark. The highest they could achieve is 15 points.
With 2 more points from tonight’s fixture, the Knights can still keep dreaming of the fourth spot on the points table. Kolkata’s next match will be on May 24, against the Delhi Capitals, another must-win situation. If KKR manages to win that too, the equation can be decided by net run rate. Additionally, KKR needs the Rajasthan Royals to lose their final league match.
Bowlers thrived in both innings of the KKR vs MI match
Tonight, the Eden Gardens had witnessed an evenly balanced contest between the bowlers and batters of both sides. The pitch was not a batter’s paradise. Ahead of the match, rain in the City of Joy made the conditions more challenging for the batters.
There was a thin layer of grass on the pitch as well. In the mid-phase of the first innings, the match had to pause because of rain again. Bowlers from both teams enjoyed the rain-affected match from beginning to end.
The Mumbai Indians were in deep trouble as they kept losing wickets in short intervals. Skipper Hardik Pandya and Corbin Bosch’s knocks helped the team to secure a total of 147 runs in their 20-over limit, which was not bad considering the condition of the pitch and weather.
Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell kept KKR on the line
The Knights, too, were not in a comfortable position as their openers, Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane, departed inside the power play. Cameron Green also went cheaply. After playing an explosive knock with the bat, Corbin Bosch was thriving on the field with the ball as well.
The experienced batting pair of Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell kept their nerves strong and performed according to the demands. Manish got 45 off 33, Rovman got 40 off 33.
The match was spiced up again when the Mumbai Indians took the well-set KKR batters’ wickets. In three deliveries, MI dismissed Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell. Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s name was on the line-up, but he was uncertain because of an injury.
The in-form batter of the Kolkata Knight Riders injured his finger in the first innings while doing the wicket-keeping job. He did not need to come out to bat, as Rinku Singh and Tejasvi Singh Dahiya wrapped things up nicely for the Purple and Gold and kept the hopes alive.
