After nearly six decades of uncertainty, residents displaced for the construction of the Sarvepalli canal are set to receive permanent pattas for their rehabiliation sites.
The State Cabinet, which met at Amaravati on Thursday gave its nod to the proposal to provide permanent pattas to the evacuees who had given up their land for the Sarvepalli canal project.
As the news broke, residents living along the canal bund celebrated resulting in a festival atmosphere.
It may be recalled that Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana had given an assurance a month back to the residents that permanent pattas would be issued soon.
He brought the revenue, irrigation and municipal officials together to work out a final and lasting solution to the long-pending problem that had created a sense of uncertainty among the residents for nearly six decades.
Residents for years had lived with the fear that their makeshift houses along the canal bund could be removed anytime. Mr. Narayana had personally walked through the colony and assured the residents of an alternate housing, with the promise of a permanent pattas.
As part of the rehabilition process, 1,400 families have been relocated to Bhagat Singh colony. Another 1,215 families will soon get pattas at a suitable location.
Following the Cabinet decision, residents gathered at four locations in Nellore city to celebrate. Some residents performed milk abhishekam to the portraits of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and Minister Narayana. AP Waqf Board Chairman Shaik Abdul Aziz, Mayor Devarakonda Sujatha and Deputy Mayor P. Roop Kumar Yadav joined the residents in the celebrations.
