‘Age should not be a factor’ – Zaheer Abbas backs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play 2027 ODI World Cup

Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas has expressed his support for Indian batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, stating that both veterans should be part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup if they remain fit and continue performing.

The former Pakistan skipper, popularly known as the ‘Asian Bradman’, dismissed concerns over the duo’s age, insisting that their experience and ability to deliver on the biggest stage make them invaluable assets for India. The 2027 ODI World Cup is set to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Zaheer believes age should not determine whether Kohli and Rohit are selected for the marquee event. According to the legendary batter, both players possess the skill and experience needed to continue representing India at the highest level.

“Both are very, very good in terms of skill and, given their experience, I don’t see any reason why they should not play the World Cup. Age should not be a factor as long as they are fit and continue scoring runs,” Zaheer was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Zaheer, who scored more than 100 first-class centuries during his illustrious career, believes players like Kohli and Rohit only become more valuable with experience. He feels that after spending years at the international level, scoring runs becomes second nature for cricketers of their calibre, while their presence also brings composure and leadership to the dressing room during major ICC tournaments.

The former Pakistan captain also shared his views on the fitness levels of the two Indian stars, praising Kohli’s commitment while suggesting Rohit could pay slightly more attention to his physical conditioning.

“Kohli is still supremely fit, while Rohit just needs to pay a little more attention to his fitness,” Zaheer observed.

The former Pakistan skipper also reserved special praise for Rohit’s recent century against England, saying the India opener remains one of the most elegant batters to watch.

“I watched Rohit score a hundred against England, and it is still a pleasure to watch him bat. He plays so effortlessly and with such sweet timing,” he said.

The Indian team will now travel to Sri Lanka to play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with the first Test starting on 15th August.
