Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are yet to announce their new captain for IPL 2027 after Rishabh Pant left the franchise right after IPL 2026. Since Pant’s departure, South Africa star Aiden Markram is being seen as the strongest candidate to lead the LSG team because of his captaincy experience.
However, Markram has directly refused to enter the race. He insisted that the final decision is with the Lucknow Super Giants team management, and he is ready to support whoever is chosen as the team’s next captain for the IPL 2027. Amid this, Ruturaj Gaikwad is set to join the CSK fitness camp.

Rishabh Pant stepped down as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain after the team finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. Later, Pant was traded back to Delhi Capitals in exchange for spinner Kuldeep Yadav. After Pant’s exit, Markram’s name is being widely discussed for the job.
Actually, the South African all-rounder leads the teams owned by the RPSG Group in SA20 of Cricket South Africa (CSA) and The Hundred of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), apart from leading the national side in T20I cricket. His plenty of captaincy experience makes him the favorite for LSG leadership in the IPL.

Still, Markram feels Lucknow Super Giants have many experienced players who can do the job. He believes the squad has several good leaders and is confident that whoever gets the captaincy will handle the responsibility well. He stressed that he is “not too fussed” about the LSG captaincy.
Aiden Markram was quoted as saying by Cricinfo: “I’ve got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There are some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet.”
Apart from Aiden Markram, Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh is also one of the leading candidates. West Indies star Nicholas Pooran, who also has international captaincy experience, is another experienced option. LSG could also look for a new captain in the IPL 2027 auction, but there may not be many suitable options available.

Aiden Markram spoke about captaincy after leading the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. He said he has really enjoyed leading the team in the 100-ball tournament, even though the format is quite different from T20 cricket. The South African star has insisted that captaincy in The Hundred is challenging because the game moves very fast, but having an experienced player like Jos Buttler in the team has made things easier. Markram explained, “It comes with its challenges, but it’s been awesome. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. It obviously helps a lot to have guys like Jos [Buttler] around.
He’s helped me quite a bit. It’s obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side [is a challenge]. You sometimes think you’ve snuck five in, and you remember there’s still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be. But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
