Ashok Sharma makes long-awaited India T20I debut
Ahead of the toss, when players of both of the teams were on the ground for regulatory warm-ups, Ashok Sharma was on the ground alongside the other regular playing eleven players.
By then, when the 24-year-old pacer was warming up minutes before the toss, it became clear that he would be a fresh inductee in the Indian playing combination for the shortest format of the game.
IPL 2026 season turned out to be his breakthrough season, after waiting for a long time as a net bowler for multiple franchises before making his IPL debut for the Gujarat Titans under the leadership of Shubman Gill.
Who is Ashok Sharma and how he earned his India call-up
As multiple seniors have been rested for the Zimbabwe series, the selectors have turned their heads towards some of the emerging talents who were impressive in the previous season with their respective teams. Ashok Kumar was among those fast bowlers who did well in domestic cricket and in the IPL 2026 season.
Ashok Sharma is from Rampura, a small village in Rajasthan, who had spent most of his time as the net bowler for the Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite receiving contracts as a full-time pacer, he had to wait until the 2026 season, when the Gujarat Titans showed their trust in the raw talent.
Sharma first grabbed the headlines with his sheer pace. He has the caliber to deliver around 150 kph with a well-controlled line and length. During the 2025–26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he got 22 scalps in 10 matches and finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. After the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, he drew IPL franchises’ attention.
Akshay Sharma, Ashok’s elder brother, who also dreamt of playing for India, sacrificed his cricket career only to support his brother. Ashok emphasized that without his support from his elder brother and the family memebersm who would not have been able to achieve the feats.
“My elder brother sacrificed his career for me. Had it not been for him, I wouldn’t have come so far,” the pacer told this to Sportstar after a Mumbai Indians match in IPL 2026.

In the IPL 2026 season, Ashok grabbed 6 wickets in six matches and as many innings for the Gujarat Titans, for an economy rate of 10.85, which was a bit expensive.
In overall T20s, the fast bowler has so far picked up 28 wickets in 16 matches for an economy rate of 9.83.
