Ravichandran Ashwin has detailed the contrasting coaching philosophies between Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid, highlighting how their distinct approaches shape the Indian dressing room culture and personnel management as the team builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.
Beyond management style, Ashwin levelled a deeper critique at what he views as a structural weakness in Gambhir’s era, where he sees an over-reliance on bits-and-pieces players to plug gaps in the squad. He’s particularly concerned about who fills the void left by Hardik Pandya, whose recurring fitness troubles cast doubt on his World Cup readiness.
Ashwin highlighted how Dravid’s team adapted to the 2023 World Cup when Hardik went down injured. Rather than frantically hunting for a makeshift sixth bowler, the unit under Dravid simply switched gears, moving to a five-bowler combination.
“If Hardik is not there, it’s Nitish Kumar Reddy and then Shivam Dube. There is no point in harping about players that are not ready to play in your combination. If they are injured, they are injured. That’s par for the course in any sport. Look at the 2023 World Cup, which just fizzled out because Hardik wasn’t part of the combination. But the moment it fizzled out, they were not searching and they did not try to play the sixth bowler. They skinned the cat differently and went with five bowlers,” Ashwin said on ESPNcricinfo.
“They ensured the rest of the squad did not have a lack of clarity and were very stable even after Hardik’s injury. They got to the final doing that. The players and the ethos in the dressing room is what will win you the World Cup. This bits and pieces has been a fascination for this management. That’s probably why we have struggled in Tests as Tests are firmly for the specialists. It’s match-winners with the ball and bat that this management needs to keep at the top of their mind,” he added.
Ashwin flags personnel clarity as India’s structural challenge.
Ashwin now proposes locking down a fixed roster of 17 or 18 players through the next 14 months, fully committing to their development rather than constantly rotating personnel based on immediate needs.
“There needs to be clarity before any discussions about personnel. Go to 17/18 players and tell them that we are going to pick the squad from that pool and they play the next 14 months,” Ashwin said.
“It has to have two keepers, three spinners and five pacers. Rotate the players in this pool with the vision of putting the best 11, come the first day of the World Cup. As of now, it’s lacking a lot of clarity,” he observed.
India’s ODI unit looked disjointed during the England series in July 2026, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat. That result has sharpened Ashwin’s case for structural change before the World Cup arrives.
With the tournament less than a year away, the time for tactical clarity is now. India’s next ODI series is against the West Indies in September-October.
