Defending champions Australia will begin their campaign to defend the ODI World Cup title with one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
Australia will face India on 7 October 2027 in Cape Town in the opening match of the Group Stage. It will be a rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup Final, where Australia defeated India to become world champions.
Australia have been placed in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A. Their Group Stage journey will include five matches across South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Defending Champions Australia Start Against India
Australia could hardly have been handed a bigger opening contest.
Their first match will be against India on 7 October at Newlands in Cape Town. The two teams were the finalists at the 2023 World Cup, making this a huge start to Australia’s title defence.
Australia will then have a short break before facing Qualifier A on 12 October in Paarl.
Their third match will take them to Harare, where they will face co-hosts Zimbabwe on 15 October.
Australia then play Afghanistan on 18 October in KuGompo City before finishing their Group Stage campaign with another major contest against Pakistan on 22 October in Paarl.

Australia’s Potential Super 7 Schedule
Before looking at Australia’s Super 7 fixtures, there is one important point to understand.
For the schedule below, we are assuming that Australia will qualify for the Super 7 stage.
Australia have been pre-seeded as A2 by the ICC. This means dates and venues for the A2 pathway have already been allocated.
However, Australia being pre-seeded as A2 does not mean the defending champions automatically qualify for the Super 7. They still have to earn qualification through the Group Stage.
The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7, while the better fourth-placed team across the two groups will take the seventh position.
Assuming Australia qualify and retain their A2 position, they will play another six matches in the Super 7.
The opponents shown below are also based on the ICC’s current pre-seeded allocations. Therefore, the exact opponents can change depending on which teams qualify.
Australia Super 7 Schedule
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 25 October 2027 | 🇦🇺 Australia vs Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 | Johannesburg |
| 28 October 2027 | 🇮🇳 India vs Australia 🇦🇺 | Victoria Falls |
| 1 November 2027 | 🇦🇺 Australia vs New Zealand 🇳🇿 | Victoria Falls |
| 5 November 2027 | 🇦🇺 Australia vs England 🏴 | Durban |
| 9 November 2027 | 🇿🇦 South Africa vs Australia 🇦🇺 | Gqeberha |
| 13 November 2027 | 🇦🇺 Australia vs Pakistan 🇵🇰 | Bloemfontein |
If all the currently pre-seeded teams qualify, Australia could face India and Pakistan twice during the tournament — once in the Group Stage and once again in the Super 7.
The ICC has pre-seeded India as A1, Australia as A2, Pakistan as A3, England as AB4, New Zealand as B1, South Africa as B2 and Sri Lanka as B3.
If a non-seeded team qualifies at the expense of one of those pre-seeded teams, it will take the Super 7 position of the team it replaces. Therefore, Australia’s A2 dates and venues can remain in place while some of their opponents could change.
World Cup 2027 Semi-Finals and Final Dates
After all seven teams have completed their six Super 7 matches, the top four teams in the standings will qualify for the semi-finals.
The first-placed team will face the fourth-placed team, while second will meet third in the other semi-final.
| Stage | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 🏏 Semi-Final 1 | 17 November 2027 | Cape Town |
| 🏏 Semi-Final 2 | 18 November 2027 | Tshwane |
| 🏆 Final | 21 November 2027 | Johannesburg |
So, if Australia qualify for the Super 7, finish among the top four and win their semi-final, the defending champions will get the opportunity to defend their crown in the World Cup 2027 Final on 21 November in Johannesburg.
Australia’s potential journey could therefore begin against India on 7 October in Cape Town and end with the Final on 21 November in Johannesburg.
If Australia reach the Final, they will play a maximum of 13 matches — five in the Group Stage, six in the Super 7, one semi-final and the Final.
