Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed Goa as the venue for the IPL 2027 mini-auction. The one-day event will take place in mid-December, bringing the auction back to India for the first time since the 2023 auction, which was held in Kochi.
Notably, the IPL 2027 auction will be the final mini-auction of the current cycle before a mega auction next year. The exact date is yet to be announced, but the event is expected between December 14 and 16 at a five-star venue that can accommodate more than 100 representatives from the 10 franchises.
BCCI Confirms Goa as Venue for IPL 2027 Auction
Devajit Saikia confirmed that the BCCI decided to host the IPL 2027 auction in Goa after holding recent events at overseas venues. The recent auctions were held overseas in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
“This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December,” Saikia said via The Indian Express.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had previously stated that finding suitable venues in India during the winter wedding season had become difficult because of the large franchise delegations.
“Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don’t get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction, and hopefully we will get the venue,” Arun Dhumal said.
The mid-December auction will give franchises an opportunity to complete their squads ahead of IPL 2027. The player purse has also increased to ₹130 crore, giving the 10 teams greater spending capacity for retentions, releases and trades before the auction.
Goa’s IPL Auction History and WPL 2026 Auction Plans
Goa has previously hosted an IPL auction. The 2009 auction ahead of the second season produced some of the biggest bids in the league’s early years, with England stars Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff becoming the most expensive players at the time.
Both players were bought for USD 1.55 million, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) signing Pietersen and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) securing Flintoff.
The auction also featured a notable bidding battle for Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) competed for the pacer, with KKR eventually signing him for USD 600,000. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was present at the KKR auction table.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has also confirmed the venue and date for the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction. The WPL auction will take place in Kochi on October 28, allowing franchises to finalise their squads before the IPL 2027 auction in December.
BCCI Seeks Franchise Feedback on Impact Player Rule
The BCCI is also seeking fresh feedback from the 10 IPL franchises on the Impact Player rule. The regulation, which allows teams to bring in a substitute player during a match, was discussed during a recent Governing Council meeting.
The rule is currently set to remain in place through the 2027 season, but it has faced criticism from several prominent Indian cricketers. Shubman Gill, former India captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel have all raised concerns about its impact on the game.
A major concern is that the rule reduces the need for genuine all-rounders, potentially affecting their development in Indian cricket. Several franchise captains had also expressed similar concerns before the 2026 season.
