BCCI vice-president explains strict new IPL guidelines

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla spoke to reporters on Friday about the new rules and guidelines being imposed by the board during IPL 2026.

Over the past few days, the BCCI drafted a new set of guidelines for player and team conduct during the IPL after certain incidents seemed to have caught the board’s attention.

Two days ago, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had written a seven-page document explaining the new guidelines and the consequences of non-compliance. He then communicated the same to all the teams. Now, Shukla has spoken to reporters as well.

“We want to ensure the transparency of IPL” – Rajeev Shukla

Rajeev Shukla spoke to ANI in Lucknow and offered his comments on the new rules being drafted.

“The BCCI is setting up new rules…The access that the players have will be controlled; unauthorised people will not be allowed to meet the players, neither in hotels nor on buses, to ensure the transparency of the IPL,” he said.

“Unauthorised incidents have surfaced” – BCCI

In a written communication to the franchises, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had said that there have been incidents noted that rose to the level of security breaches.

Most notably, Rajasthan Royals manager Romi Bhinder was seen using a mobile phone in the dugout. Royals skipper Riyan Parag was then caught vaping in the dressing room. But, according to Saikia, these aren’t the only instances.

“Instances have been noted of players and support staff leaving team hotels at irregular hours without informing the designated Security Liaison Officers (SLOs) or Team Integrity Officer (TIOs). Such departures create significant security vulnerabilities and expose individuals to risks that cannot be mitigated if the relevant personnel are uninformed,” the advisory stated.

The BCCI to conduct spot checks

In the same advisory, Saikia said that the board reserves the right to conduct spot checks to see if the teams are adhering to the protocols. The board also seemed concerned about certain incidents involving the players’ girlfriends and their unrestricted movement with the team.

BCCI’s advisory had also warned players to remain vigilant of potential honey-traps and any legal liabilities that might arise from them.

“The BCCI draws the attention of all Franchises to the well-documented risks of targeted compromise and honey-trapping that pervade high-profile sporting environments,” Saikia stated in the advisory, according to the report.

“The possibility of incidents giving rise to serious legal allegations, including those under applicable laws on sexual misconduct, cannot be discounted. IPL franchise management must remain vigilant and proactive in mitigating such risks at all times.”
