Ben Stokes, the English red-ball captain and all-rounder, revealed that he had a stunning chemistry with Brendon McCullum, and they would land on the same page on multiple occasions. However, he revealed that it is tough for them to always be on the same page.
England had appointed Brendon McCullum as their red-ball coach after they wanted a massive bounce back. However, having lost many matches, they bounced back with the duo of McCullum and Stokes working wonders for the three lions.
Following a terrible season in 2025-26, when England had faced consecutive defeats in the longest format of the game, including the humiliating loss to the Aussies in the Ashes, the ECB had threatened to break the dynamic coach-captain duo.

Ben Stokes has shared an amazing bond with the former NZ batter, whose strategies of Bazball seemed ideal for someone like Stokes, who has always backed a more modernized approach to one of the oldest formats of the game.
However, with recent disagreements, the two have not always been found on the same page. The English skipper has revealed that he has never had a poor relationship with McCullum, but it is impossible to always agree on every note.
“Saying that we weren’t aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement. When you are in a position of leadership along with someone else, if anyone thinks that you’re always going to agree on everything, then it’s just impossible. And to me, that just isn’t a healthy relationship,” said Ben Stokes.

The English skipper further stressed the fact that cricketers do need to object to things they don’t comply with and agree on things they do; this is how an ideal environment is built for the sport.
“It’s a healthy environment for sport in particular, where everyone just agrees with everyone, or everyone just says yes to, you know, the person up there. You need to debate; you need not arguments, but you need discussions, and then you end up getting to a place where both want to end up.
“Similar to Brendon and me, we’re also dissimilar in other areas as well, but the thing that we both want is to be successful, and we possibly decide how we get to being successful. It may be the same here, but then it slightly differs here, but we’ll always be able to end up on the same page by having these discussions,” Stokes continued.

Stokes revealed how he and McCullum were mostly on the same page throughout most of their team meetings or strategic calls, but sometimes when they weren’t, they would talk it out in discussions and arrive at one common standpoint.
“We agree 95% of the time on things, but those 5% times, maybe we disagree, as we might have different views on a few things, and then after discussions, we end up at a place where my character and Brendon’s character, we put them together, and then we get it to where we want to get to,” claimed Ben Stokes.
“But you know, agreeing to everything was just impossible. So you know, saying that we weren’t aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement,” he added.
