CJP calls off September 5 Delhi protest march after ‘assurances’ from Centre over FIR withdrawal

The Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP), on Tuesday (September 1, 2026), withdrew their call for a march on September 5, 2026, after “assurances” given by the Centre over withdrawal of FIRs in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak protests in Delhi in July.

CJP co-convenor Saurav Das read out a statement in open court before the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, stating that, owing to the assurances given by the government to withdraw the FIRs and work out the modalities of the compensation scheme for victims of the July 20 police crackdown, the CJP “deems it appropriate to withdraw the march scheduled for September 5, 2026”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the Supreme Court that no FIRs registered between July 20, 2026, and July 25, 2026, in connection with the NEET-UG protests would be pursued, and that there would be no new FIRs.

Mr. Mehta also urged the Court to extend the same relief to protestors across other States and Union Territories.

The CJP announced a march in Delhi on September 5, 2026, from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters over the Centre’s alleged failure to honour the promises made during the Delhi protests, particularly those related to the withdrawal of FIRs against the demonstrators.

FIRs withdrawn keeping in mind future of students: Nadda

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, who had coordinated between the protestors and the Centre in July, welcomed the CJP’s decision to call of the protest.

On the Centre’s decision to withdraw the FIRs, he said that, “keeping the students’ future in mind, we assured on behalf of the Government of India that the cases registered against the protesting students would be withdrawn and that no harsh action would be taken against them in the future. In line with this, we also consulted with the governments in States ruled by the BJP, and we are now fulfilling that assurance.”
