Dhruv Jurel highlights discipline as India push for win

India reached 460 for 9 by the end of Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium on August 16, 2026. Devdutt Padikkal scored 167 in the same innings, anchoring India’s batting effort on a pitch that showed signs of changing character as the match progressed. Dhruv Jurel contributed 51 off 68 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six, before being caught by de Silva off Jayasuriya’s bowling.

Jurel had partnered with Manav Suthar in a 55-run stand for the seventh wicket that helped India build a competitive total. Speaking after Day 2, Jurel reflected on the nature of the Galle pitch and what India would need to do to secure victory. His observations drew on his experience with India A, where he had encountered similar conditions at the venue.

The changing nature of the Galle pitch meant that both batting and bowling would require constant adjustment as the Test match unfolded over the remaining days. Jurel emphasised that success would depend on maintaining discipline and precision rather than relying on individual moments of brilliance.

“From what I’ve seen, even in the India A [games], this wicket keeps changing quickly, and it depends on the weather. If the covers have been on, moisture comes in, and if the sun comes out, it becomes dry. It will keep changing [as this Test match progresses]. We just have to keep working hard,” Jurel said as quoted by Cricinfo.

India’s bowling strategy to secure victory

India’s bowlers would need to sustain their efforts across extended spells, mirroring the approach that Sri Lanka’s attack had employed during India’s first innings.

“I feel we will have to bowl very long spells, like their bowlers have been doing. We’ll need to stay consistent. It’s not rocket science. We’ll need to put balls in great areas. That’s all. We have to keep it simple and stay determined. If we have to win, we have to take 20 wickets,” said Jurel.
