As the captain of the Indian cricket team, Shubman Gill will have to climb a mountain. Under his leadership, the team has played some brilliant cricket in recent times. The main Test will be the ODI World Cup next year, when they will be on the hunt for the title. Can Shubman Gill able to guide his team to glory with his leadership skills and batting skills?
During a discussion panel with Cricbuzz, former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary and Mohit Sharma pointed out some crucial aspects of Shubman Gill. They explained Gill as a batter and as a leader.
Shubman Gill has established himself as a prolific ODI batter
Shubman Gill has represented India in all three formats of the game and owns eye-catching batting stats in the Indian Premier League with the Gujarat Titans. So far in the ODIs, the top order batter has played 62 matches for Team India and scored 3037 runs for a batting average of 57.30. In that number of games, he claimed eighteen 50s and eight 100s to establish himself as an effective batter for this very format.
Manoj Tiwary points out that Gill has changed his game after he got the Gujarat Titans’ leadership role. The former cricketer observed that when Gill was playing only as a batter for the Titans, he tried to play explosive knocks. But after being appointed as the leader of the group, he changed his approach. Instead of paying focus on short-lived explosive knocks, he tried to take the innings deep to ensure the win on every occasion.
Mohit Sharma highlights the mentality of the skipper
On the same note, the former cricketer in the panel, Mohit Sharma, mentioned that Shubman Gill has a clear mindset; he set a bar as soon as he was appointed as Team India captain. He is only 26 and still has a lot of room to grow in the new future.
In agreement with Sharma’s point of view, Tiwary further stated that Shubman Gill will evolve more sharply as he gets more time and experience over time. Manoj Tiwary compared Gill with the former captains like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, who left their marks with their leadership skills.
Manoj Tiwary compares Gill with the other skippers
“He is a kind of player who likes to think positively, and that should be. But there is a question: are some captains born leaders? Like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli at their time. It will take some time. Because it seems like the series we faced setbacks, we are in the learning process. And he is such a player, such a captain who, with experience, the match and the series will keep playing, he will get better. So I think there is no reason to think more,” Manoj Tiwary opines.
