Fans go wild as Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking century helps India whitewash Afghanistan in T20I series

India wrapped up their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in emphatic fashion, producing another dominant performance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After winning the first two matches by seven wickets, India completed a 3-0 series whitewash with a massive 127-run victory in the third T20I.

The highlight of the night was a breathtaking century from Abhishek Sharma, who produced a stunning display of power hitting to put India in complete control. His sensational knock earned him the Player of the Match award as India successfully defended 221/7 by bowling Afghanistan out for just 94 in 14.1 overs.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl first, but the decision quickly backfired as India’s opening pair provided a blistering start. Abhishek took the attack to the Afghan bowlers from the outset, finding boundaries with remarkable regularity. Abhishek smashed 108 runs from just 34 deliveries, an innings packed with nine fours and 11 sixes. His extraordinary strike rate of more than 317 gave Afghanistan little opportunity to settle and turned the contest heavily in India’s favour.

Sanju Samson provided excellent support at the other end, contributing a well-made 50 from 35 balls with two fours and four sixes. The pair laid the foundation for a huge total before Afghanistan eventually managed to break the partnership.

After the departure of the openers, India continued to push for a formidable score. Shreyas Iyer added a useful 29 from 20 balls, including two sixes, while Shivam Dube chipped in with 14 from 10 deliveries. Ishan Kishan scored 10 off eight balls, while Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel made smaller contributions. Afghanistan picked up wickets at regular intervals towards the end, with Azmatullah Omarzai taking two wickets and Rashid Khan and Abdullah Ahmadzai claiming one each.

Despite those breakthroughs, India finished on an imposing 221/7 from their 20 overs. The total left Afghanistan needing 222 to complete what would have been a remarkable chase.

Afghanistan’s chase never gained momentum as India’s bowling attack quickly put the visitors under pressure. Ibrahim Zadran top-scored with 25 from 16 balls, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz made 15 from 11. Azmatullah Omarzai added 17, but there was little support from the rest of the batting lineup.

Nitish delivered an impressive spell, claiming three wickets for 25 runs from his four overs. Ravi Bishnoi also picked up three wickets, finishing with 3/26 from 3.1 overs. Axar was particularly economical, taking two wickets while conceding only nine runs in three overs.

Jasprit Bumrah and Yash Thakur chipped in with one wicket apiece as India dismissed Afghanistan for 94 in only 14.1 overs. India therefore secured a commanding 127-run victory and completed a clean sweep in the series.

India had already won the first two matches by seven wickets each, but the third game produced an even more emphatic result. With Abhishek’s explosive century setting up the victory and the bowlers finishing the job, India ended the series unbeaten at 3-0.
