Gen Alpha students storm DM office in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, over road construction

Generation Alpha school children and residents from Chandupur in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) marched with national flags to the district Collectorate, staging an uproar and a demonstration to demand the construction of a long-overdue road leading to their school.

The video of the protest went viral leading to an uproar on social media. The students numbered over 200 along with at least 50 parents who participated in the protest were from villages and hamlets of Chandupur gram panchayat located in the Kurara block of Hamirpur district. They raised concerns regarding the poor condition of the road leading to their school, which becomes nearly impassable during the monsoon season.

Speaking to media, students and their parents said that the local population had to rely on an unpaved road.

“In times of heavy rainfall, this route transforms into a muddy path, complicating access for students traveling to school and for residents needing to transport ill individuals to medical facilities. Additionally, an alternative route previously utilized by the community has been closed off by the Forest Department, further restricting their access to the area,” said a parent accompanying the students.

This protest marks not the first effort by the students to highlight this issue. They claimed earlier local authorities placed soil on the road as a temporary fix, after lot of efforts. “However, with the onset of rain, the road reverted to a muddy state once more,” added a student.

As the children reached the premises of the Collectorate, carrying the Tricolour and banners, local officials and police personnel reached the spot to prevent the situation from escalating. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhishek Kumar and Circle Officer Yashpal Singh reached the location with police personnel and attempted to stop the students from proceeding towards the DM’s office. However, the students continued towards the office, after deliberations with officials the protestors were pacified. The Hindu attempted to speak with the District Megistrate (DM) Hamirpur, but failed to get a response.
