Haryana water quality has deteriorated in 93 blocks since 2022: Congress MLA

Congress Kaithal MLA Aditya Surjewala has criticised the BJP government over the deteriorating quality of drinking water in Haryana, citing data presented by the government in the State Assembly during the monsoon session.

Mr. Surjewala said groundwater in 88 of Haryana’s 142 blocks had an average Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level above the acceptable limit of 500 mg/L in 2025, with 35 blocks recording 1,000 mg/L or more. Water quality had deteriorated in 93 blocks (65.5%) compared with 2022, while the State’s average TDS level rose from 658 mg/L to 737 mg/L.

Palwal and Nuh were among the worst affected. Palwal’s average TDS rose 74% in three years, from 940 to 1,636 mg/L, while Nuh’s Indri block recorded 1,974 mg/L, nearly double its 2022 level.

He said some drinking water sources had TDS levels as high as 9,553 mg/L, against the acceptable limit of 500 mg/L.

“Water quality is not improving; instead, it is deteriorating every year under the BJP government,” Mr. Surjewala said.

He also questioned the continued dependence on groundwater, noting that Faridabad, Gurugram, Palwal, Panchkula and Yamunanagar remain 100% dependent on it, despite Haryana’s extensive canal network and repeated plans for canal-based water supply.
