The rehabilitation works on the Indrakeeladri Ghat Road leading to the Kanaka Durga temple have been temporarily suspended due to extreme weather conditions and intense heatwave prevailing in the city.
The repair works, jointly undertaken by the Endowments Department and Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department, commenced on May 26 from the tollgate up to the hilltop road. The authorities had initially planned to complete the works by June 12.
However, the R&B Sub-Division Deputy Executive Engineer informed the temple authorities through an official letter on Thursday that the present weather conditions were not suitable for continuing the road rehabilitation works.
According to officials, the severe heatwave conditions have made it difficult for field workers to carry out the repairs. Undertaking bitumen and chemical-based road repair works under such extreme heat would not be technically appropriate and could lead to cracks and damage to the road surface.
In view of the situation, the R&B Department requested the temple authorities to revise the work schedule until weather conditions return to normal.
The officials said permanent rehabilitation works have been postponed temporarily, while the road will be restored for regular vehicular movement to ensure smooth access for devotees visiting the temple.
The temple administration announced that vehicles would be allowed on the Ghat Road as usual from the morning of May 29. The authorities also assured devotees that the revised schedule for permanent modernisation works would be announced in advance once weather conditions become favourable.
