The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 continues to deliver moments of high-octane drama, and the 37th match of the season between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium was no exception. On a humid Sunday evening in Chennai, the ‘Yellow Army’ found themselves struggling to defend a modest total, but the highlight of the night wasn’t a towering six or a searing yorker; it was a baffling fielding lapse that left fans and commentators in stitches.
Rashid Khan and Manav Suthar fumble a sitter near the boundary in a bizarre moment during CSK vs GT clash
In the 18th over of the CSK innings, with the hosts desperate to accelerate, young Kartik Sharma looked to take on the pace of Kagiso Rabada. At 17.2 overs, Rabada delivered a back-of-a-length ball outside off-stump. Kartik attempted a forceful pull across the line but only managed to sky a thick top-edge. The ball hung in the Chennai air for what seemed like an eternity, gravitating toward the deep square leg and deep midwicket region.
What should have been a regulation catch turned into a comedy of errors. Manav Suthar sprinted in from deep square leg while the experienced Rashid Khan moved in from deep midwicket. Both fielders converged on the same spot, but as the ball began its descent, a total breakdown in communication occurred.
Assuming the other would take the charge, both players pulled out at the very last second. The ball bounced harmlessly between them, mocking their hesitation, and trickled over the boundary rope for four runs. Rabada stood at the top of his mark, hands on head in disbelief, as the Chepauk crowd erupted—not just for the runs, but for the sheer absurdity of the moment that mirrored some of cricket’s most famous viral bloopers.

Sai Sudharsan steers GT to a dominant win over CSK
While the fielding mishap provided the laughs, Sai Sudharsan provided the fireworks. Chasing a target of 159, the Titans’ opener looked in sublime touch from the first delivery. Sudharsan’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression, smashing 87 off just 46 balls, including 8 boundaries and 4 towering sixes.
Earlier in the evening, CSK’s innings struggled to find momentum. Despite a valiant, unbeaten 74 from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, the rest of the lineup faltered against a disciplined GT attack. Rabada was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 3/25, effectively dismantling the CSK middle order. Shivam Dube (22) and Dewald Brevis (29) provided brief cameos, but a final total of 158/7 always felt under par on a surface that seemed to ease up under the lights.
The chase was never in doubt once Sudharsan and Shubman Gill (33) put on a 58-run opening stand. Following Gill’s departure, Jos Buttler played the anchor role to perfection with a steady 39 off 30 balls. Sudharsan eventually fell in the 17th over, but by then, the damage was done. GT reached 162/2 in 16.4 overs, securing two vital points and moving up to the 5th spot on the table, leaving CSK to ponder their third consecutive loss at home.
