Jharkhand’s newest cricket sensation has replaced Rishabh Pant in the India A squad after the star wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out of the first two matches against New Zealand A due to injury. The selection has brought another promising Jharkhand youngster into the spotlight, raising hopes that he could soon earn a place in the senior Indian team.
The player is Kumar Kushagra, who has been scoring heavily in domestic cricket over the last few seasons. His impressive performances across all three formats, particularly in high-pressure matches, have strengthened his case as a future wicketkeeper-batter for India.
His India A selection is particularly significant because he has been chosen to fill the place of an established international wicketkeeper-batter. While it does not guarantee a senior India call-up, it gives Kushagra another opportunity to strengthen his case.
Kumar Kushagra’s Impressive Domestic Cricket Numbers
The Jharkhand youngster has delivered strong performances across all three domestic formats.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Kushagra finished as Jharkhand’s second-highest run-scorer behind Ishan Kishan. He scored 422 runs at an average of 60.28 and a strike rate of 162, showing his ability to score quickly in T20 cricket.
His performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy were equally impressive. Kushagra was again Jharkhand’s second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 360 runs at an average of 73.6 and a strike rate of 102.5.
He also made a significant contribution in the previous Ranji Trophy season, scoring 572 runs at an average of 47.6.
These numbers highlight one of Kushagra’s biggest strengths: his ability to adjust his batting according to the format. He can attack aggressively in T20 cricket, maintain a healthy scoring rate in one-day matches and play patiently in red-ball cricket.
Duleep Trophy Final and Australia A Performances Prove His Temperament
Kushagra’s performances are not limited to domestic league matches. He has also delivered when his team needed him the most.
In the Duleep Trophy final, when several established batters struggled, Kushagra played a brilliant century in the first innings and followed it with a valuable 46-run knock in the second innings. Alongside Ishan Kishan, he played an important role in his team’s title-winning campaign.
He carried that form into the India A series against Australia A, scoring an impressive 113 off 240 balls in difficult circumstances. His innings helped India A recover and demonstrated his ability to handle quality bowling attacks.
These performances suggest that Kushagra is not just a talented stroke-maker but also a batter capable of handling pressure.
Can Kumar Kushagra Become India’s Next Wicketkeeper-Batter?
Kushagra’s selection comes after Rishabh Pant suffered a left-side strain during the Irani Cup. The BCCI has confirmed that Pant will miss the first two matches against New Zealand A, while his availability for the third match will be decided later.
The opportunity is another important step for Kushagra, who was also part of India’s A-team plans for the recent Australia A series.
India already have several talented wicketkeeper-batters, but Kushagra’s ability to contribute across formats could make him a strong contender for future opportunities.
Another Jharkhand Star Following MS Dhoni and Ishan Kishan?
Jharkhand has already given Indian cricket some remarkable players.
MS Dhoni became one of the greatest captains in cricket history, while Ishan Kishan has established himself as an exciting attacking wicketkeeper-batter. Saurabh Tiwary also represented India, although he could not build the same international career.
Now, Kumar Kushagra appears ready to take another step forward.
His performances in domestic cricket, success in important finals and growing experience with India A suggest that he has the potential to become another international cricketer from Jharkhand.
The upcoming matches against New Zealand A will give him another chance to impress the selectors and move closer to a senior India call-up.
