Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. This has created a big question for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2027.
Rahane was leading KKR in the previous season. Now the franchise has to find not only a replacement player but also a new captain who can take the team forward.
A strong captain is one of the biggest needs for KKR. Since Shreyas Iyer left the captaincy role, the team has struggled to find a leader who can build a champion mentality inside the squad.
So, who can become the next KKR captain?
Let’s look at the four biggest contenders.
Rinku Singh is the most natural option available inside the current squad.
He was made the vice-captain in the previous season, which clearly shows that the management sees leadership qualities in him. Rinku has also been associated with KKR for many years and understands the team’s culture very well.
However, there are still some questions.
His recent performances have not been very consistent, and he has very little captaincy experience at the highest level. Leading a team like KKR is completely different from being an important player.
Still, if KKR wants to back a long-term Indian captain, Rinku Singh remains one of the strongest contenders.
Sunil Narine is one of the most experienced players in the KKR dressing room.
He has shown leadership qualities in franchise cricket outside the IPL and has been part of KKR’s successful journey for many years.
Narine understands pressure situations and enjoys huge respect inside the team.
The only concern is age.
If KKR wants a captain for only one or two seasons, Narine can be an excellent choice. But if the franchise is planning for the next five years, they may look for a younger option.
Cameron Green is another player whose name comes into the discussion.
The Australian all-rounder has leadership potential, but he has very limited captaincy experience at the top level.
There is another challenge.
Green already carries the pressure of being a high-value overseas player. Adding captaincy responsibility may affect his own performance.
Also, it is not yet certain whether KKR will retain him for the next season.
Because of these reasons, Cameron Green looks like a possible but risky captaincy option.
Among all the available options, Hardik Pandya looks like the strongest candidate.
Reports have linked Hardik with possible trade discussions, and several IPL franchises are believed to be interested in him.
If KKR manages to bring Hardik into the squad, they could solve multiple problems at once.
He is an experienced IPL captain. He failed as a captain for MI but he was too good leader for GT who has also won a trophy for them.
He is an all-rounder who brings balance to the playing XI.
Most importantly, he knows how to handle pressure in big matches.
KKR could even think about releasing Cameron Green and trying an all-cash deal if a trade becomes possible.
If the franchise wants an experienced leader who can immediately make them title contenders, Hardik Pandya could be the ideal choice.
