The last rites were performed for Manipur musician Chongtham Vikram Singh at his locality in the State’s capital, Imphal, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) amid calls for swift action against his killers.

The body of the musician, who died after an alleged assault in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony on September 7, was flown to Imphal in the morning. Hundreds gathered at the airport to receive the body, which was taken to the family residence in Imphal’s Thangmeiband Lourungpurel. Several people broke down when Vikram’s mortal remains were brought home.

Chongtham Vivek Singh, the slain musician’s brother, said the death caused deep grief to people across Manipur.

Justice demanded

“This is a very sad and painful moment for everyone in the State. His death is not only a loss for our family but also for the entire music fraternity,” he said, demanding strict punishment for those responsible for his brother’s death.

He urged the Delhi authorities to ensure that the investigation and legal proceedings are completed swiftly.

Vikram’s death also intensified calls for a law against racism, believed to be the prime reason behind attacks — lethal at times — against people from the northeastern region in “mainland India”, specifically the metros.
