Mohammad Amir, who is now a retired cricketer from Pakistan, has officially received his British citizenship and also received his passport. The former Pakistan cricketer retired from international cricket for the second time on December 14, 2024. He previously retired in 2020, but made a comeback in March 2024 to play for Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Mohammad Amir, after receiving British citizenship, can feature in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). Pakistan cricketers have been barred from playing in the IPL since 2009 due to the political tensions between the two countries. Only in the inaugural season were some cricketers part of the teams. However, after getting British citizenship, he becomes eligible for IPL.

According to reports, the British government has officially granted Amir a UK passport after he met all legal requirements in an application submitted several years ago. This development establishes his new status as a British citizen. Amir, 62 T20Is for Pakistan, is now eligible to play in several global franchise leagues, including the IPL, under overseas player rules.

Who will pick Amir in IPL?

Now the question arises whether the 36-year-old, if any franchise will be interested in picking the former UK-based Pakistan pacer. Mohammad Amir is a huge admirer of former India captain Virat Kohli, and there is a chance that he might be seen playing for the defending champions side, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

However, before being selected, Mohammad Amir’s name must come into the auction shortlist for the next year’s mini-auction, which happens around December. Given his ability to perform in high-pressure T20 environments, he will surely be one of the players to look out for if he gets picked in the IPL. It has opened doors to one of the world’s most lucrative cricket leagues, adding a fresh chapter to his cricket journey.

Azhar Mahmood is the only player to play in the IPL after getting his UK citizenship and passport. He played for Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) for two seasons in 2012 and 2013. Later on, he was picked by three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2015. That was the final time he played in the IPL.

In 2008, KKR was the team with the highest number of picking cricketers from Pakistan, with the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Mohammad Hafeez, and Salman Butt. Sohail Tanvir is the only Pakistani pacer to win the Purple Cap in the inaugural edition of the league with Rajasthan Royals, as the former pacer also won the maiden edition of the tournament in 2008.
