As India gear up for their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, cricket enthusiasts are closely analysing how head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill will formulate their starting lineup. The action kicks off on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, followed by the second Test starting August 23 in Colombo. With conditions in Galle historically favouring turn and bounce, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his insight on what the ideal combination should look like for the series opener.
Ravichandran Ashwin names his probable India XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin outlined a spin-dominant XI tailored specifically to conquer Galle’s turning track. Ashwin emphasized that the pitch conditions in Sri Lanka naturally dictate playing extra slow bowlers, advocating for a four-spinner approach alongside just two frontline pacers.
In Ashwin’s ideal lineup, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul form the opening dynamic, followed by a middle order featuring Shubman Gill at No. 4 and Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper at No. 5. For the crucial No. 3 slot, Ashwin highlighted the importance of fitness regarding left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan. Sudharsan was in sublime form during India A’s tour of Sri Lanka, smashing a century at Galle. Ashwin noted that Sudharsan’s familiarity with Galle’s unique wind patterns and turning angles makes him a vital asset against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. However, should Sudharsan fail to receive fitness clearance from the Centre of Excellence, Devdutt Padikkal remains a reliable alternative given his domestic run-scoring form.
To round out the attack, Ashwin called for the returning Ravindra Jadeja, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar, who recently impressed with a seven-wicket haul. With these three covering the frontline spin duties, India would only require two specialist fast bowlers to complete the XI.
“Jadeja will definitely play. Manav Suthar took seven wickets in the last game – he’ll play. And Kuldeep Yadav should also play. That makes three spinners. I think they should go with Saransh Jain at No. 7, which leaves – No. 5 Rishabh Pant, No. 4 Shubman Gill, No. 3 Devdutt Padikkal or Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul. That leaves two fast-bowler spots,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin picks an unexpected debutant for the first Test
The highlight of Ashwin’s predicted XI is the inclusion of off-spin-bowling all-rounder Saransh Jain at No. 7. Drafted into the national squad as a like-for-like replacement for the injured Washington Sundar, Jain earned his maiden India call-up following stellar performances in first-class cricket.
Ashwin expressed strong backing for the 33-year-old uncapped player to make his Test debut right away. With over 2,200 runs and multiple centuries in domestic red-ball cricket, Jain offers crucial lower-order batting stability alongside his off-spin capabilities. Batting Jain at No. 7 allows India to seamlessly balance a long batting tail while unleashing a multi-dimensional four-pronged spin setup capable of exploiting Sri Lankan conditions to the fullest.
