The Indian Premier League (IPL) transfer window could witness one of its biggest developments in recent years, with reports suggesting that a prominent India wicketkeeper-batter may be involved in a blockbuster move ahead of IPL 2027. While no official confirmation has been made by the franchises or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), discussions surrounding a potential player swap have already generated significant interest among fans.
Despite entering the season with high expectations under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, the team struggled to make an impact and eventually finished at the bottom of the points table. As a result, changes in both leadership and squad composition are expected ahead of the next edition.
Reports suggest Rishabh Pant could return to Delhi Capitals
According to reports, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are likely to release Pant and send him back to his former franchise, Delhi Capitals (DC), in what could become the first major trade ahead of IPL 2027. The proposed deal is expected to see left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav move in the opposite direction. Reports indicate that both franchises are currently completing the necessary formalities before the trade can be submitted for approval.
Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history when LSG secured his services for INR 27 crore at the 2025 mega auction. However, his stint with the franchise did not go according to plan. Across two seasons, he scored 581 runs at an average of 26.4 and a strike rate of 135.74 while leading the side in 28 matches, winning 10 and losing 18.
The wicketkeeper-batter reportedly informed the franchise of his intention to step down from captaincy shortly before the IPL 2026 final. The development followed comments from team management hinting at a possible leadership reset after another disappointing season.

A reunion that could bring Pant back home
If the trade is approved, Pant would return to the franchise where his IPL journey began in 2016. During his previous stint with Delhi, he established himself as one of the league’s most destructive batters and eventually took over the captaincy. Between 2021 and 2024, Pant captained Delhi Capitals in 44 matches, guiding the side to 24 victories. He also enjoyed some of the most productive years of his IPL career with the franchise, scoring 1,205 runs as captain at an average of 35.44 and a strike rate of nearly 144.
For Delhi Capitals, the move would reunite them with a player who remains closely associated with the franchise and its fanbase. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants would strengthen their spin department with the addition of Kuldeep, who has claimed 72 wickets in 65 matches for Delhi since joining the franchise in 2022.
At this stage, the trade remains subject to official approval, and neither franchise has announced the move publicly. However, if completed, it could become one of the most significant player transfers in IPL history and a storyline that dominates discussions heading into IPL 2027.
