Rohit Sharma is reportedly not keen on returning as Mumbai Indians captain, with Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah emerging as the two leading options for the franchise. According to the Times of India, the MI management is considering a change in leadership as it looks to move in a new direction while retaining Hardik Pandya as a player.
The franchise has already explored the possibility of bringing Rohit back as captain; he is unlikely to take up the role again. Rohit Sharma is also understood to be actively involved in discussions surrounding Mumbai Indians’ captaincy and the team’s future direction.

Rohit’s return to the Mumbai Indians captaincy was one of the options considered by the franchise after Hardik Pandya’s poor tenure as skipper. However, according to the Times of India report, Rohit Sharma is not keen to wear the captain’s armband again.
MI are planning to retain Pandya as a player for the upcoming season while moving towards a new leadership structure. The management has already discussed the possibility of appointing a new captain, with Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah emerging as the two potential candidates.
Rohit Sharma’s involvement in the discussions could also be significant given his long association with the franchise and his experience as their most successful captain. The final decision will determine the direction of an MI side that has struggled to maintain consistency in recent seasons.
Rohit Sharma’s glorious career as Mumbai Indians captain
Rohit Sharma remains the most successful captain in Mumbai Indians’ history. He took over the leadership midway through the 2013 season and immediately guided the franchise to its maiden IPL title, defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final.
That was the beginning of an extraordinary run. Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also captained MI to the Champions League T20 title in 2013.
Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians in 158 IPL matches, winning 87 of them. His leadership produced five championships, making him one of the most successful captains in IPL history.
His captaincy also helped establish the core that made Mumbai one of the dominant teams of the IPL era, with players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya becoming important members of the side.
Jasprit Bumrah vs Tilak Varma: Who could become MI captain?
Of the two candidates, Tilak Varma could arguably be the stronger long-term choice for Mumbai Indians. The 23-year-old has already been handed a major leadership responsibility by the Indian selectors, having been appointed India’s T20I vice-captain under Shreyas Iyer in 2026.
That decision came from the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, while India’s current coaching setup under Gautam Gambhir has also shown faith in Tilak’s leadership potential. He has subsequently captained South Zone in the Duleep Trophy as well.
Jasprit Bumrah, meanwhile, offers greater experience and has already captained Mumbai Indians. He also led MI in an IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings when Hardik Pandya was unavailable. However, his workload and injury-management requirements make a long-term captaincy commitment less straightforward.
Therefore, if Mumbai Indians want a younger leader who can potentially serve them for several seasons, Tilak could have the edge over Bumrah.
