Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 journey came to a disappointing end after a crushing 89-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The loss officially knocked the five-time champions out of the playoff race, with Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side finishing the season with 12 points from 14 matches.
While CSK’s inconsistent performances remained one of the biggest talking points throughout the campaign, the absence of legendary skipper MS Dhoni was equally felt. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter missed a major part of the season due to a calf strain followed by a thumb injury, leaving the Chennai camp without its biggest match-winner during crucial moments.
Following the elimination, the spotlight quickly shifted towards Dhoni’s future, with fans eager to know whether the iconic cricketer would return for another IPL season.
Ruturaj Gaikwad reacts to MS Dhoni’s retirement speculation
During the post-match interaction, CSK captain Gaikwad was asked the question every Chennai supporter had in mind — will Dhoni return next season? Gaikwad admitted that even the team is uncertain about Dhoni’s plans and said clarity would only emerge closer to the next edition of the tournament.
“Obviously you will get to know it next year itself. Even I’ll get to know it next year itself. Obviously, it’s a hard, hard miss for us definitely. He’s someone who can, have a fear in the opposition, especially coming in those late overs. Can really change the game, can really change the momentum just by staying at the crease,” said Ruturaj at the post-match chat.
The CSK skipper acknowledged how badly the franchise missed Dhoni’s presence this season, especially in pressure situations during the final overs. According to Gaikwad, Dhoni’s mere presence at the crease creates panic in the opposition camp and can completely alter the momentum of a game.
He also praised the younger players for stepping up despite the difficult circumstances and said the experience gained during this challenging season could benefit the team in the future.
“So, he’s someone, definitely we missed a lot this season. But, I mean, we never know about next season, but obviously really happy with the guys we had and, really happy with the experience they got this year,” added Ruturaj.

Dhoni’s absence leaves emotional void in Chennai
For Chennai Super Kings fans, Dhoni’s absence was more than just a tactical setback. Over the years, the former India captain has become the heartbeat of the franchise and the face of CSK’s identity. From leading the side to multiple IPL titles to producing countless unforgettable finishes, Dhoni’s connection with Chennai has gone far beyond cricket. Every season, packed stadiums across India continue to erupt in anticipation of watching him walk out in the yellow jersey one more time.
Even at 44, Dhoni’s aura remains unmatched. Though his appearances on the field have reduced due to fitness concerns, his influence inside the dressing room and among supporters continues to be enormous. Throughout his IPL career, Dhoni repeatedly expressed his emotional attachment to the franchise. One of his most memorable remarks came when he jokingly said he would continue playing for CSK as long as possible, even if the franchise had to “drag him in a wheelchair.” That statement perfectly summed up the deep bond between Dhoni and Chennai — a relationship built on loyalty, success and emotion.
With IPL 2027 still months away, uncertainty now surrounds whether fans have already witnessed Dhoni’s final appearance as a player. By the start of next season, the legendary cricketer will be 45 years old, making the decision even more complicated. For now, neither Dhoni nor the franchise has given any official confirmation regarding retirement. However, one thing remains certain — whenever the final chapter arrives, it will mark the end of one of the most iconic player-franchise relationships in cricket history.
