Some captains make history. Others set an example that inspires those who follow. Shubman Gill is showing why he could belong to both groups, with a personal commitment to preparation that goes beyond scoring runs or leading India on the field.
The Indian captain is set to take personal net bowlers to New Zealand and pay their expenses himself. At a time when his batting has flourished under the responsibility of captaincy, Gill’s decision reflects his determination to leave no gap in his preparation.
Shubman Gill Takes Personal Responsibility for Preparation
India have announced their squads for the New Zealand tour, but Gill wants additional bowling resources for his practice sessions. He plans to fund the travel and stay of a separate group of net bowlers rather than rely entirely on the arrangements available to the touring side.
According to a PTI report, four to five bowlers will accompany him. The report describes this as the first known instance of an Indian cricketer personally funding a dedicated group of bowlers for an overseas tour.
The significance lies in his willingness to take responsibility. Gill is prepared to spend his own money to give himself the preparation he believes he needs. For a captain whose batting is central to India’s chances, that investment could also benefit the team.
It offers future Indian captains an example of leadership through action: identifying a need and making a personal contribution to address it.
Gill’s Batting Has Flourished Under Captaincy
Gill’s commitment comes alongside strong batting performances as India’s captain in both Tests and ODIs.
| Format | Runs as captain | Batting average | Centuries | Fifties | Highest score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | 1,150 | 71.87 | 6 | 2 | 269 |
| ODIs | 938 | 85.27 | 3 | 5 | 223* |
His first Test series as captain, in England in 2025, brought 754 runs and four centuries. His highest score of 269 remains the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain.
In ODIs, his unbeaten 223 from 133 balls against West Indies helped India chase 406 in Guwahati. These performances show that leadership has been accompanied by greater personal output with the bat.
India’s results may not always have matched expectations, but Gill has continued to make substantial contributions. His latest preparation plan shows that he is still looking for ways to improve rather than settling for his individual success.
Ranji Trophy Before the New Zealand Trip
Before travelling, Gill is expected to play for Punjab against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy match beginning on October 18 in Mullanpur.
The fixture will provide competitive red-ball practice before he moves into overseas preparation. He is then expected to leave for New Zealand on October 23 or 24, giving him time to adjust to the conditions and work with his personal net bowlers.
