Railway officials attend to the Narsapur-Chennai Vande Bharat Express after a hot axle was detected in the C4 coach at Vijayawada railway station on Wednesday.
Passengers travelling on the Narsapur-Chennai Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20678) panicked after smoke was seen coming from a coach when the train arrived at Vijayawada railway station on Wednesday (September 23, 2026).
All passengers got off the train and were safe, officials said.
Railway officials said a hot axle was detected in the C4 coach when the train reached Vijayawada station. Technical and safety teams attended to the problem, and drinking water, food and waiting facilities were provided to the passengers at the station.
A help desk was also set up and an alternative train was arranged for the passengers. Those who did not wish to continue their journey were given a refund of the fare, officials of the Vijayawada division of South Coast Railway (SCoR) said.
The Vande Bharat Express was delayed by nearly four hours. The alternative train subsequently left Vijayawada station safely, railway authorities said.
