Sourav Ganguly opens up on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s future in Test cricket

Sourav Ganguly opens up on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s future in Test cricket

Rajasthan Royals (RR) young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has delivered impressive performances over the past few months in the IPL 2026 season, sparking massive excitement among Indian cricket fans. Many are already discussing how quickly the teenage sensation could rise through the national ranks. Amid the growing buzz surrounding the 15-year-old batter, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has now offered his candid take on the youngster’s future.

The ex-BCCI president praised Suryavanshi’s fearless batting and immense potential but also urged caution regarding expectations around the longer format of the game.

Sourav Ganguly gives honest verdict on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Speaking to TOI in Kolkata, Ganguly made it clear that while Suryavanshi already looks ready for T20 cricket, he still needs more experience before entering the Test arena. The former India skipper, however, was full of admiration for the teenager’s fearless approach against elite bowling attacks at such a young age.

“Vaibhav can play T20 cricket immediately, but not Test cricket yet. He needs to score runs in first-class cricket first. Still, the way a 15-year-old is batting against world-class bowlers is incredible. He is India’s future. We never imagined T20 cricket would become this massive. But the game keeps evolving. T20 cricket is here to stay, and it will continue producing fearless batters who can hit sixes consistently,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly also praised the confidence and attacking mindset shown by Suryavanshi throughout his rise in domestic and franchise cricket. According to the former captain, modern cricket is evolving rapidly, and young batters today are far more fearless than previous generations.

Ganguly backs Auqib Nabi and Prince Yadav for bigger opportunities

Apart from discussing Suryavanshi, Ganguly also spoke about domestic cricket selections and highlighted two young pacers who have impressed him recently. The former BCCI president backed Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi for a spot in India’s squad for the Afghanistan series, pointing to his strong performances in the Ranji Trophy. Ganguly also voiced support for young fast bowler Prince Yadav.

“I think both Auqib Nabi and Prince Yadav deserved opportunities,” Ganguly stated.

He further added that genuinely quick bowlers should not be made to wait too long in domestic cricket before receiving chances at a higher level. For now, though, much of the attention remains firmly on Suryavanshi, whose explosive batting continues to dominate conversations across Indian cricket.
