Former Team India batter Robin Uthappa has made a bold prediction about Suryakumar Yadav’s future after the conclusion of IPL 2026. Uthappa believes the veteran batter could return to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and reunite with former mentor Gautam Gambhir during the latter stages of his playing career.
The prediction comes during a challenging phase for the 35-year-old cricketer. Despite captaining the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup 2026 title, Suryakumar was recently left out of the national T20I squad. The selectors appointed Shreyas Iyer as captain for India’s upcoming white-ball assignments.
Suryakumar Yadav Fits Into That as Captain With Gambhir as the Mentor – Robin Uthappa
Speaking on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel, Robin Uthappa predicted that Suryakumar Yadav could return to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Uthappa believes the move could happen if Gautam Gambhir returns to the franchise after his stint with the Indian team.
“From Surya’s point of view, for all intensive purposes, he might go to KKR. It rekindles the idea that once Gautam Gambhir finishes his stint with the Indian team, he probably goes back into KKR as a mentor or coach. And Surya fits into that as captain with Gambhir as the mentor again.”
Suryakumar played for KKR between 2014 and 2017 under Gambhir’s captaincy. He played an important role in the franchise’s IPL 2014 title-winning campaign and scored valuable runs in the middle order.
Returning to the Indian Side Is Going to Be Hard – Robin Uthappa on Suryakumar Yadav’s Future
Robin Uthappa expressed doubts about Suryakumar Yadav’s chances of returning to India’s T20I setup. Uthappa feels age and recent form could make an international comeback difficult.
“Surya will play until he is 40. Unless he is marred by terrible form and the midas touch is just over. But returning to the Indian side is going to be hard for Surya. He won’t get A cricket at his age. So he won’t get to play on the Australian wickets where the 2028 T20 World Cup will be played.”
The 35-year-old has struggled in T20Is over the last year. Following India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, the selectors appointed Shreyas Iyer as the team’s T20I captain. Iyer is set to begin his tenure during India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland, starting on June 26.
Suryakumar Yadav’s IPL 2026 Struggles Fuel Speculation Over His Future
Suryakumar Yadav’s future with the Mumbai Indians has become a talking point after a disappointing IPL 2026 season. The right-hander struggled for consistency, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. He is Mumbai Indians’ second-highest run-scorer, with 4,020 runs in 125 innings.
Despite his struggles at the franchise level, Suryakumar enjoyed considerable success as India’s captain. He led the team to victories in the Asia Cup 2026 and the T20 World Cup 2026 while also maintaining an unbeaten record in bilateral series.
Surya is the third-leading run getter for India in T20Is. He scored 3,272 runs at an average of 36.35 and a strike rate of 162.94, with 25 fifties and four centuries to his name. Only Rohit Sharma (4,231) and Virat Kohli (4,188) scored more runs than him.
