Sydney Thunder have signed New Zealand left-arm pacer Trent Boult for the entire BBL 2026-27 season, including the finals. The deal is a one-year contract, and Boult will join the Thunder squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Boult joins fellow New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson at the Thunder, forming a right-arm and left-arm new-ball pairing. The signing adds considerable experience to a Thunder bowling attack that has struggled in recent seasons.
Boult had previously appeared in the BBL for Melbourne Stars, playing eight games in the 2022-23 season. His return to the competition marks his first BBL appearance since that stint with the Stars.
Most recently, Boult was the second-highest wicket-taker in the inaugural ETPL, representing Edinburgh Castle Rockers. He claimed 16 wickets in that tournament at an economy rate of 6.63, underlining his continued effectiveness in franchise cricket across formats.
Why is Boult’s full-season availability significant for Thunder?
Boult’s commitment to the full BBL 2026-27 season, including the finals, is notable given the congested global franchise calendar. The BBL 2026-27 season is scheduled to conclude on January 26, while the SA20 in South Africa is set to begin on January 17. Boult is expected to turn out for MI Cape Town again in the SA20, with their campaign beginning on January 20, which means there is a potential overlap at the back end of the BBL season.
Thunder head coach Andrew Flintoff, who was appointed in June 2026 after replacing Trevor Bayliss following back-to-back last-place finishes in 2023-24 and 2025-26, spoke about the value of having both Boult and Ferguson in the squad.
“Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player, and a world-class performer. Having a couple Kiwis in the team who have played a lot of cricket together over the years brings a level of familiarity, and I think they complement each other really well as a right-arm and left-arm pairing. One of the things we haven’t been able to do in recent times is take wickets with the new ball, so hopefully these two can remedy that,” said Flintoff as quoted by ESPN.
What does Boult’s signing mean for Thunder’s BBL campaign?
Thunder have endured a difficult run in the BBL, finishing last in both 2023-24 and 2025-26 under Trevor Bayliss before Flintoff took charge in June 2026. The addition of Boult alongside Ferguson gives the side two experienced international pacers who have bowled together extensively at international level for New Zealand.
“I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie at Thunder. The way he gets involved is what I’m hoping to mirror and make a mark like he has – not just with the team but [with] the fans as well. Cricket has given me so much over the years, and I’m still at the stage where I love going out there, contributing, taking wickets, and trying to be aggressive in the powerplay,” said Boult in a Thunder release.
