India could pull off a major masterstroke by including young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the playing XI for the third T20I against West Indies. After West Indies chased down a target of over 250 runs in the second T20I, India may need to rethink their batting approach ahead of the next encounter at Holkar Stadium in Indore.
The previous match raised a serious question: What is a safe total in modern T20 cricket? Even a score above 250 proved insufficient, despite the pitch not being considered an exceptionally batting-friendly surface before the match.
The challenge could become even bigger in Indore. Holkar Stadium is known for its batting-friendly conditions and relatively short boundaries, making it a venue where even massive totals can come under pressure.
Why India Need More Batting Firepower
On extremely batting-friendly pitches, scoring at a strike rate of 200 may no longer guarantee a match-winning advantage. When conditions allow batters to attack almost every delivery, the difference between winning and losing can come down to an additional 15–20 runs.
A strike rate of 150 was once considered impressive in T20 cricket, while 200 was exceptional. However, on flat surfaces with short boundaries, teams must aim even higher.
This is where Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could become India’s biggest weapon.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Could Change the Game
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi possesses the rare ability to attack bowlers at a strike rate approaching 250–300. Alongside Abhishek Sharma, he is among the young Indian batters capable of producing extraordinary scoring rates.
His IPL performances have already demonstrated his attacking potential. As highlighted in the analysis, Sooryavanshi finished the campaign with a strike rate of approximately 237 and a batting average of around 48, despite playing some matches on slower surfaces that were less favourable for aggressive batting.
If he can produce such numbers across different conditions, imagine the damage he could cause on a batting paradise like Holkar Stadium.
Even a short innings could make a significant difference. For example, a batter facing 20 deliveries at a strike rate of 200 scores 40 runs. At 275, the same 20 deliveries produce 55 runs.
That is a difference of 15 runs without consuming a single additional delivery.
In a contest where both teams can potentially score above 250, those extra runs could prove decisive.
Should India Sacrifice an All-Rounder?
India’s bowling performance in the previous match also exposed an important concern. When specialist bowlers and part-time options are conceding runs at similar rates, the advantage of selecting an additional bowling all-rounder becomes less convincing.
India could consider sacrificing Shivam Dube’s place to accommodate Sooryavanshi and strengthen their batting lineup.
Abhishek Sharma could serve as the sixth bowling option, while Tilak Varma and Sooryavanshi offer additional part-time possibilities.
This would allow India to field a more aggressive batting combination without completely abandoning their bowling flexibility.
The strategy would involve a risk, particularly because part-time bowling cannot guarantee the same reliability as a specialist option. However, on a surface where batting power could decide the result, India may find the gamble worthwhile.
Could Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Be India’s Biggest Masterstroke?
The biggest advantage of including Sooryavanshi would be his ability to maximise the powerplay alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Both batters could attack from the first delivery, putting West Indies under pressure before the fielding restrictions end.
Sooryavanshi has shown that he can maintain an extraordinary scoring rate even on slower pitches. On a ground with shorter boundaries and favourable batting conditions, his aggressive approach could become even more dangerous.
India must now decide whether they are prepared to take such a bold selection call. Including Sooryavanshi would be a gamble, but it could provide the additional batting firepower that was missing in the previous encounter.
India’s Probable Playing XI for 3rd T20I (If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is Included)
- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
- Abhishek Sharma
- Sanju Samson (WK)
- Ishan Kishan
- Shreyas Iyer (C)
- Tilak Varma
- Naman Dhir
- Axar Patel
- Arshdeep Singh
- Kuldeep Yadav
- Mayank Yadav
Proposed change: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replaces Shivam Dube, with the batting order adjusted to accommodate him at the top, However, Team India is expected to go with unchanged playing11.
