Police have arrested two bus drivers for the gang-rape of a woman inside a private sleeper bus in Rani Bagh, here. The accused have been identified as Umesh Kumar (40) and Ramender (45). Police confirmed on Thursday that an FIR has been filed and the vehicle seized.
According to the police, the assault occurred late on May 11. The woman met the accused as part of a monetary arrangement to provide sexual services. However, she later refused to engage further and allegedly asked the men to stop. The woman stated in her complaint that despite her refusal, the accused assaulted her.
“An enquiry revealed that the woman had some kind of a monetary agreement with the accused. They boarded the bus together at Rani Bagh and took it to Nangloi,” said Vikram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
The men did not pay the promised amount after which she decided not to deal with them anymore. “She refused and despite the withdrawal of consent, they gang raped her,” the official added.
According to police, the woman used a phone belonging to one of the accused to make the PCR call. The police said the FIR was registered after a medical examination of the victim and her statement was recorded in front of a counsellor. “Both accused were apprehended within hours of incident being reported. One of them was at the spot and the other was apprehended after a few hours from the same area,” the officer said.
The police have seized the sleeper bus which usually plies from Delhi to Bihar on a daily basis. “The accused had intended to pick up passengers that night. Instead, they chose to meet the woman and assaulted her,” the police said.
