Nothing really compares to the feeling MS Dhoni brings when he steps out in that Chennai Super Kings yellow during the IPL. For CSK fans, it’s not so much about who’s playing alongside him or analyzing tactical matchups—it’s about just watching Dhoni out there. Lately, with all the talk about whether he’ll retire or keep going, former India stars Zaheer Khan and Murali Kartik threw out some ideas about why Dhoni might just surprise us again and keep playing another season.
Trying to figure out what Dhoni will do next—that’s always been a guessing game. Kartik pointed out how Dhoni keeps everyone in the dark about his plans. “With MSD,” he said, “the only thing you know for sure is that you don’t know what he’ll do next.” It’s classic Dhoni. “He never lets his left hand know what the right hand is doing. We can sit here and talk about it all day, but we won’t crack his code.”
Even though Dhoni’s pushing his mid-40s, there’s this strong gut feeling that he’s not quite finished with CSK. “Part of me thinks, hang on, he’s 44? Maybe he’ll go again and just shock everyone. Next year might be another surprise,” Kartik added.
Honestly, this unpredictability is what makes Dhoni so different. Regular cricket logic just doesn’t stick when it comes to him. For CSK fans—Chennai fans, or really any CSK supporter—seeing him in yellow is about emotion, not logic. He could go out there and hardly do anything at all, and they’d still want him in the squad. It’s just how it is.
There’s another clever side to this story. Kartik mentioned how, ahead of the big mega-auction, Dhoni basically gave CSK an edge by registering himself as an uncapped player. Imagine that—a guy who’s won every ICC trophy you can think of, getting listed as uncapped. It sounds strange, but Dhoni did it for the team. Kartik put it plainly: it’s smart, and it gives Dhoni a buffer. He can spend the off-season testing his fitness, mentoring younger players, and lining up the perfect lineup before another big shakeup.
“Isn’t it funny,” Kartik said, “a guy who has collected so many ICC titles ends up as an uncapped player? All of us who played for India, after a while, you haven’t played in long enough, and suddenly—uncapped.”
Zaheer jumped in too, saying Dhoni just saw the whole rule as a way to give CSK more options. “When it’s time for a big auction, and the franchise is focused on investing in fresh talent, you only get two uncapped players. CSK used MSD as one of them at the start of this cycle. So if they spot a younger player who can take things forward, Dhoni—just like he chose to be uncapped for the team’s sake—would let CSK use that slot to their advantage.”
Dhoni’s selfless approach freed up resources so CSK could focus on the future, and Zaheer thinks that tactical decision makes the coming season even more important. “If that’s the thinking, next year’s a big deal. It gives him a chance to return and think about retirement or whatever comes next when the auction arrives. And if you ask him? He’ll just shrug and say, as he always does, ‘Let’s see how the off-season goes.’”
