Fans erupt as Sonal Dinusha hits another stunning century to frustrate India on Day 5 of Colombo Test

Sonal Dinusha once again produced a sensational performance for Sri Lanka, completing another century in the second innings of the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. After scoring 103 in the first innings, the all-rounder returned with another determined knock in the second innings to keep the hosts’ hopes of avoiding defeat alive.

Sri Lanka had been forced to follow on after being bowled out for 290, but their second innings has been far more competitive. Dinusha’s resistance has now become the biggest talking point, with the 25-year-old continuing to frustrate India’s bowling attack deep into Day 5.

Sonal Dinusha completes another century in remarkable fightback

Sri Lanka resumed Day 5 at 229/6, with Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha tasked with keeping the innings alive. The pair responded brilliantly, adding 111 runs for the seventh wicket and frustrating India throughout the morning session. Nuwantha eventually fell for 46 after lunch when Manav Suthar broke the partnership.

Ravindra Jadeja then dismissed Prabath Jayasuriya, but Dinusha continued to hold firm with the tail. He eventually completed his century shortly after tea, reaching 102* from 209 deliveries. The knock once again showcased his patience and determination as Sri Lanka attempted to stretch their lead.

Dinusha creates history as fans celebrate

Dinusha’s second century of the match also brought a major statistical achievement. He became only the third Sri Lankan batter to score three centuries in a two-Test series. He also became only the second batter after Andy Flower to record four consecutive 50-plus scores in his first four Test innings against India.

With Lahiru Kumara providing valuable support, Dinusha helped Sri Lanka move to around 389/8, giving the hosts a lead of roughly 170 runs. India still remain in control after their huge first-innings total, but Dinusha’s remarkable resistance has made the visitors work considerably harder for the remaining wickets. His back-to-back centuries have given Sri Lankan fans plenty to celebrate during an otherwise difficult Test.
