The Telangana High Court on Tuesday (September 08) directed the Telangana State Level Police Recruitment Board to accept applications from transgender candidates for the recruitment test of stipendiary cadet trainee constables and sub-inspector posts.
A bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin, after hearing a writ petition filed by four transgender aspirants for the constable and sub-inspector posts, observed that transgenders cannot apply for the selection process as the online application forms gave options of only binary classification of sex. The petitioners submitted that the binary classification of sex compelling the applicants to choose either male or female parameters at the stage of application was against the law.
The bench sought to know from the government as to why guidelines were not issued to different government departments to do away with the stereotype binary classification of sex and embrace more inclusive approach providing adequate opportunities for transgenders. Standing counsel for the recruitment board C. Rajasekhar Reddy informed the bench that already the deadline for submission of applications had been extended till September 16.
