In a positive development, Riyan Parag has started his training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) following shoulder surgery in June. Parag has been out of action since the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season. He missed a few matches of the season and finally decided to undergo a serious medical procedure.
As the batting all-rounder remains out of action for months, social media platforms are the only available options to get regular updates on the development of the promising cricketer. He was troubled by the shoulder injury before Parag decided to undergo surgery.
Riyan Parag starts his rehabilitation at CoE in Bengaluru
His rehabilitation has started at a crucial juncture, when the Indian cricket team is preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. In the past few months, because of multiple injury layoffs and tight schedules across the formats, the Indian team management was forced to hand debut caps to several young cricketers.
Parag has made his name as a white-ball cricketer; he will like to get back into contention for the national cricket team selection. As he has just started his training at the CoE, it may take some time to get match fit. When Riyan Parag will be able to get back into action is still unknown. Before the surgery in June, he was actually under the observation of the selectors. But the shoulder injury cut his career growth suddenly.
Riyan Parag’s return date is yet to be confirmed
Riyan Parag was part of India’s white-ball plans before a shoulder injury ruled him out of the South Africa tour in 2024. The Ranji Trophy 2026-27 is currently being played, but he is unlikely to be selected in the later part of the tournament. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is scheduled to start on December 14, could be the stage for the return of Riyan Parag.
His future in the Indian Premier League is also not secure after the conclusion of IPL 2026, as it was previously believed. Despite the explosive batting of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi throughout the tournament, Rajasthan Royals did not manage to reach the final of the tournament. Parag was appointed as the full-time captain of the team after the departure of Sanju Samson.
Controversy around Riyan Parag in IPL 2026
More than his individual performance, Parag was surrounded by a controversial episode. In the middle of a match, he was caught smoking on camera. The incident sparked a widespread controversy during the IPL 2026 season. The 2026 season with the Royals was not as great as it could be for Parag, as he scored only 309 runs in 14 matches with a couple of half-centuries. With the ball, he got a couple of wickets in 4 games.
To get back into the national cricket team, the 24-year-old will have to work hard to get back into form and to prove his fitness. Parag has so far played only one ODI for India, which was against Sri Lanka in 2024, and has featured in nine T20Is.
