Justin Langer left stunned by Rohit Sharma’s masterclass in MI’s record IPL 2026 chase

The Mumbai Indians have lost seven matches in IPL 2026; their stats in no way reveal the proficiency of their batters. While Rohit scored 200+ runs in just five appearances, Ryan Rickelton has amassed runs averaging over 50 in eight appearances in the season.

Also, they are the only team with three centuries so far in this season, as Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Tilak Varma, three players, have scored a century each. MI’s main concern has been their poor bowling performance, which they have failed to rectify despite all attempts.

LSG head coach Justin Langer lauded Mumbai Indians’ former skipper Rohit Sharma after his match-winning knock at the Wankhede against the Super Giants. This marked Rohit’s comeback after having missed five matches this season with an injury.

Rohit Sharma top-scores for MI at Wankhede, as Mumbai pull off record chase

Rohit Sharma started the season with a splendid show at the Wankhede against the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, after two more games, he struggled at this same venue with a major concern around his hamstring injury.

Rohit, having played four matches, returned to the MI top order after having missed five matches in a row. He amassed 84 runs in the innings and hit the ball cleanly, scoring with a strike rate of 190. He helped MI chase a massive 229-run target, the highest ever for the Mumbai Indians.

Rohit has amassed 221 runs in the season after having played five matches for the Mumbai Indians. This might be the last years of the 39-year-old’s career, yet he has been promising with the bat, though struggling to keep up with his fitness.

LSG coach Justin Langer is in awe of Rohit Sharma’s batting

The way Rohit Sharma played in the match against LSG at their home ground in Wankhede Stadium had impressed the opposition head coach, Justin Langer. He also recalled how he had seen Rohit dominating for India when he was part of Australia’s coaching staff.

“What a player, what a player. I always knew, as an opposition player with the Australian team, and I now know as an opposition player with the Lucknow Super Giants, what a player he is. And this is the brilliance of the IPL—that every night, on TV or at the ground, we watch some of the greatest talent on earth,” said Justin Langer, the LSG head coach.

Rohit truly was a nightmare batter for Australia during his career, as he mastered the art of playing his shots and countering those bouncy tracks of Australia. Even as an opponent, he has had immense success against Australia.

Does MI have a chance to make it to the playoffs in IPL 2026?

With the Mumbai Indians winning their third match of the season, they are far behind their opposition. Currently placed in the ninth position, the Mumbai Indians have just four matches left this season, and even an all-win scenario would take them to not more than 14 points.

Mumbai will have to win all matches, depend on the teams in the top 4 to lose some of their games, and lastly, would have to increase their run rate exponentially, which has been much lower than others. Mathematically, they do not stand much chance for a spot in the playoffs this season; however, miracles have not been an exception for MI.
