Shreyas Iyer set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain? Reports suggest PBKS star is frontrunner

India could be on the verge of a major leadership change in T20I cricket, with multiple reports indicating that Shreyas Iyer is the leading candidate to replace Suryakumar Yadav as captain ahead of the upcoming tour of Ireland. The Indian selection committee is expected to meet shortly to finalize the squad for the two-match T20I series against Ireland and the subsequent five-match series against England.

However, reports suggest that the decision regarding the captaincy has already been made, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) preparing to usher in a new era in the shortest format. The development comes just months after India lifted the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar’s leadership, making the reported decision one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket.

Reports claim Shreyas Iyer is set to become India’s new T20I captain

According to reports, Shreyas has emerged as the preferred choice of the selectors to lead India’s T20I side moving forward. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain has built an impressive leadership resume over the past few years. He guided Delhi Capitals (DC) to their maiden IPL final in 2020 before leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title in 2024. More recently, he captained PBKS to their first IPL final in over a decade, further strengthening his credentials as a leader.

Apart from his captaincy record, Iyer has also enjoyed a productive run with the bat. After scoring over 600 runs during IPL 2025, he followed it up with another excellent campaign in IPL 2026, amassing 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81, including a century. Reports further suggest that if Iyer is appointed captain, youngster Tilak Varma could be named vice-captain as India look to build a leadership group for the future.

Suryakumar Yadav’s future under scrutiny

While Suryakumar remains one of India’s most accomplished T20 batters, reports indicate that his recent struggles with the bat may have influenced the selectors’ thinking. The 35-year-old enjoyed considerable success as captain, leading India to T20 World Cup glory and maintaining an unbeaten bilateral series record during his tenure. However, his individual performances reportedly failed to meet expectations over the past year.

Suryakumar endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign with Mumbai Indians (MI), scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. His struggles have continued in domestic T20 cricket, where he managed scores of 19 and 4 in his opening two matches of the Mumbai T20 League. If reports are accurate, Suryakumar could not only lose the captaincy but may also miss out on selection for the upcoming T20I assignments.
