New Zealand have made four notable additions to their squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia, with Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James returning to the international setup. The series will be New Zealand’s first assignment of the 2026-27 season and an important opportunity for the White Ferns to assess their squad ahead of the inaugural 2027 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.
Eden Carson returns after long injury layoff
Carson’s return is one of the biggest talking points surrounding the squad after the off-spinner spent several months on the sidelines following elbow surgery. The 51-cap international has been unavailable since December last year but has now completed her rehabilitation and is ready to resume international cricket. The spinner admitted that returning to the White Ferns environment was a special moment after a lengthy recovery period.
“The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute,” Carson said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Her inclusion strengthens New Zealand’s spin resources, with captain Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire also part of the squad. Carson, Penfold, Rowe and James were all part of the wider group that missed selection for the recent T20 World Cup.

Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James bolster key areas
New Zealand have also brought back Penfold and Rowe as they look to add depth to their pace-bowling options. Their inclusion comes after the international retirements of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, leaving the squad with changes to its bowling personnel. Rowe and James spent part of the winter playing for New Zealand A in Sri Lanka, giving them recent competitive experience ahead of the Australia series. Penfold, meanwhile, featured for Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition.
James provides another option in the batting group following the departure of experienced campaigner Suzie Bates. Her return gives New Zealand an opportunity to assess their batting combination against one of the strongest sides in women’s cricket. However, there will be a change behind the stumps, with Izzy Gaze unavailable after undergoing surgery on a persistent thumb injury. She is targeting a return to cricket in early 2027, while Polly Inglis is set to take over wicketkeeping duties.
The series will also begin a new coaching phase for New Zealand, with Dean Brownlie appointed interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s departure. Brownlie has worked as the team’s batting coach for nearly four years, while additional coaching support for the Australia tour is expected to be confirmed next week.
